Global status and conservation potential of reef sharks

M. Aaron MacNeil, +131 more
- 22 Jul 2020 -
TL;DR: The results reveal the profound impact that fishing has had on reef shark populations: no sharks on almost 20% of the surveyed reefs, and shark depletion was strongly related to socio-economic conditions such as the size and proximity of the nearest market, poor governance and the density of the human population.
Journal ArticleDOI

Environmental DNA reveals tropical shark diversity in contrasting levels of anthropogenic impact

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that eDNA metabarcoding can be effectively employed to study shark diversity and further developments in this field have the potential to drastically enhance the ability to assess and monitor elusive oceanic predators, and lead to improved conservation strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biodiversity assessment of tropical shelf eukaryotic communities via pelagic eDNA metabarcoding

TL;DR: This study employs eDNA metabarcoding to compare beta diversity patterns of complex pelagic marine communities in tropical coastal shelf habitats spanning the whole Caribbean Sea and detects highly diverse communities, which varied significantly among locations, and proved good descriptors of habitat type and environmental conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ecological consequences of Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease in the Turks and Caicos Islands

TL;DR: The authors in this paper described the trends in coral community composition, cover, richness, and diversity from 2012 to 2020 on the South Caicos fore reef, to contextualize the impact of the ongoing Stony coral tissue loss disease outbreak in 2020.
