TL;DR: The results reveal the profound impact that fishing has had on reef shark populations: no sharks on almost 20% of the surveyed reefs, and shark depletion was strongly related to socio-economic conditions such as the size and proximity of the nearest market, poor governance and the density of the human population.

TL;DR: This paper analyzed patterns in chondrichthyan extinction risk, reconstructed catches, and regulations in the Western Central Atlantic Ocean, which includes the greater Caribbean, and found that over one-third (35.6%) were assessed as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered largely due to fishing.

TL;DR: Shiffman et al. as discussed by the authors found that overfishing is driving resident reef sharks toward extinction, causing diversity deficits in reef elasmobranch (shark and ray) assemblages.
