TL;DR: The results suggest that there has been gene flow between some Native Americans from both North and South America and groups related to East Asians and Australo-Melanesians, the latter possibly through an East Asian route that might have included ancestors of modern Aleutian Islanders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ancient genomes link early farmers from Atapuerca in Spain to modern-day Basques
Torsten Günther,Cristina Valdiosera,Cristina Valdiosera,Cristina Valdiosera,Helena Malmström,Irene Ureña,Irene Ureña,Ricardo Rodríguez-Varela,Ricardo Rodríguez-Varela,Óddny Osk Sverrisdóttir,Evangelia Daskalaki,Evangelia Daskalaki,Pontus Skoglund,Pontus Skoglund,Pontus Skoglund,Thijessen Naidoo,Emma M. Svensson,José María Bermúdez de Castro,Eudald Carbonell,Michael Dunn,Jan Storå,Eneko Iriarte,Juan Luis Arsuaga,Juan Luis Arsuaga,José Miguel Carretero,José Miguel Carretero,Anders Götherström,Mattias Jakobsson +28 more
TL;DR: It is shown that these individuals emerged from the same ancestral gene pool as early farmers in other parts of Europe, suggesting that migration was the dominant mode of transferring farming practices throughout western Eurasia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Four millennia of Iberian biomolecular prehistory illustrate the impact of prehistoric migrations at the far end of Eurasia.
Cristina Valdiosera,Cristina Valdiosera,Cristina Valdiosera,Torsten Günther,Juan Carlos Vera Rodríguez,Irene Ureña,Irene Ureña,Eneko Iriarte,Ricardo Rodríguez-Varela,Ricardo Rodríguez-Varela,Luciana G. Simões,Rafael M. Martinez-Sanchez,Emma M. TL;DR: The impact of prehistoric (Neolithic–Bronze Age) migrations in Iberia is studied by analyzing genomic and dietary data, demonstrating that farming practices were introduced by a population genetically distinct from the first farmers in central and northern Europe.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genomic Analyses of Pre-European Conquest Human Remains from the Canary Islands Reveal Close Affinity to Modern North Africans
Ricardo Rodríguez-Varela,Ricardo Rodríguez-Varela,Torsten Günther,Maja Krzewińska,Jan Storå,Thomas H. Gillingwater,Malcolm MacCallum,Juan Luis Arsuaga,Juan Luis Arsuaga,Keith Dobney,Keith Dobney,Keith Dobney,Cristina Valdiosera,Cristina Valdiosera,Mattias Jakobsson,Anders Götherström,Linus Girdland-Flink,Linus Girdland-Flink +17 more
TL;DR: The first genome-wide sequence data and mitochondrial genomes from eleven archaeological Guanche individuals originating from Gran Canaria and Tenerife are generated, showing that the Guanches were genetically similar over time and that they display the greatest genetic affinity to extant Northwest Africans, strongly supporting the hypothesis of a Berber-like origin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic turnovers and northern survival during the last glacial maximum in European brown bears
Erik Ersmark,Erik Ersmark,Gennady F. Baryshnikov,Thomas Higham,Alain Argant,Pedro Castaños,Doris Döppes,Mihály Gasparik,Mietje Germonpré,Kerstin Lidén,Grzegorz Lipecki,Adrian Marciszak,Rebecca Miller,Marta Moreno-García,Martina Pacher,Marius Robu,Ricardo Rodríguez-Varela,Manuel Ángel Rojo Guerra,Martin Sabol,Nikolai Spassov,Jan Storå,Christina Valdiosera,Aritza Villaluenga,John R. Stewart,Love Dalén +24 more
TL;DR: The genetic data show a high Late Pleistocene diversity across the continent and challenge the strict confinement of bears to traditional southern refugia during the last glacial maximum, as well as suggesting a genetic turnover just before this time, and a steep demographic decline starting in the mid‐Holocene.
