Progress in electrical energy storage system: A critical review

During the past several years, there have been increasing research activities in the field of stability analysis and switching stabilization for switched systems. This paper aims to briefly survey recent results in this field. First, the stability analysis for switched systems is reviewed. We focus on the stability analysis for switched linear systems under arbitrary switching, and we highlight necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability. After a brief review of the stability analysis under restricted switching and the multiple Lyapunov function theory, the switching stabilization problem is studied, and a variety of switching stabilization methods found in the literature are outlined. Then the switching stabilizability problem is investigated, that is under what condition it is possible to stabilize a switched system by properly designing switching control laws. Note that the switching stabilizability problem has been one of the most elusive problems in the switched systems literature. A necessary and sufficient condition for asymptotic stabilizability of switched linear systems is described here.

Stability and Stabilizability of Switched Linear Systems: A Survey of Recent Results

This paper presents control and coordination algorithms for groups of vehicles. The focus is on autonomous vehicle networks performing distributed sensing tasks where each vehicle plays the role of a mobile tunable sensor. The paper proposes gradient descent algorithms for a class of utility functions which encode optimal coverage and sensing policies. The resulting closed-loop behavior is adaptive, distributed, asynchronous, and verifiably correct.

Coverage control for mobile sensing networks

Projection-based control (PBC) systems have significant engineering impact and receive considerable scientific attention. To properly describe closed-loop PBC systems, extensions of classical projected dynamical systems are needed, because partial projection operators and irregular constraint sets (sectors) are crucial in PBC. These two features obstruct the application of existing results on existence and completeness of solutions. To establish a rigorous foundation for the analysis and design of PBC, we provide essential existence and completeness properties for this new class of discontinuous systems.

Existence and Completeness of Solutions to Extended Projected Dynamical Systems and Sector-Bounded Projection-Based Controllers

Switched-actuator systems with setup times (SAcSSs) are systems in which the actuator conﬁguration has to be switched during operation, and where the switching induces non-negligible actuator downtime. Optimally control-ling SAcSSs requires the online solving of both a discrete actuator allocation problem, in which the switch-induced actuator downtime is taken into account, as well as an optimization problem for the (typically continuous) control inputs. Mixed-integer model predictive control (MI-MPC) oﬀers a powerful framework for tackling such problems. However, the eﬃcient modeling of SAcSSs for MI-MPC is not straightforward, and real-time feasibility is often a major hurdle in practice. It is the objective of this paper to provide an intuitive and systematic modeling procedure tailored to SAcSSs, which is speciﬁcally designed to allow for user-friendly controller synthesis, and to yield eﬃcient MI-MPCs. We apply these new results in a case study of large-volume magnetic-resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound hyperthermia, which involves the heating of tumors (using real-valued local heating controls, as well as discrete range-extending actuator relocation during which no heating is allowed) to enhance the eﬃcacy of radio- and chemotherapy.

This paper deals with observability properties of networked control systems subject to packet losses. We employ a switching systems perspective in which available information on the packet loss signal, e.g., there can be at most a pre-specified number of consecutive losses, is modelled through an automaton. Based on this perspective we address several natural extensions envisioned in [7]. Our specific contributions are as follows. Firstly, we show that the method introduced in [7] in the context of controllability of linear systems subject to packet losses extends to the question of observability. The proposed characterization is necessary and sufficient as well as algorithmically verifiable. For the observability problem, our proof is valid also for non-invertible matrices, thereby improving upon the previous results in [7]. Secondly, we show that the model employed for our analysis encompasses the model of wireless control networks with switching delays introduced in [6] (though at a cost of exponential encoding). We raise several open questions related to the algebraic nature of the problem under consideration.

On observability in networked control systems with packet losses

This paper presents the design of tracking controllers for piecewise linear systems, with application to sheet control in a printer paper path. The approach that we will take is based upon an error space approach, which is derived from linear systems theory. We will show that due to the discontinuity in the piecewise linear system, the resulting model in error space consists of both flow conditions, describing the dynamics in each regime, and jump conditions, describing the error dynamics at the switching boundaries. Two types of controllers are proposed that result in either full or partial linearization of the closed-loop error dynamics. To show the effectiveness of the control design approach in practice, the sheet controllers are implemented on an experimental paper path setup.
