TL;DR: This chapter discusses formulaicity, the variable unit distributed lexicon of formulaic sequences, and its role in language acquisition.
Abstract: A considerable proportion of our everyday language is 'formulaic'. It is predictable in form, idiomatic, and seems to be stored in fixed, or semi-fixed, chunks. This book explores the nature and purposes of formulaic language, and looks for patterns across the research findings from the fields of discourse analysis, first language acquisition, language pathology and applied linguistics. It gradually builds up a unified description and explanation of formulaic language as a linguistic solution to a larger, non-linguistic, problem, the promotion of self. The book culminates in a new model of lexical storage, which accommodates the curiosities of non-native and aphasic speech. Parallel analytic and holistic processing strategies are the proposed mechanism which reconciles, on the one hand, our capacity for understanding and producing novel constructions using grammatical knowledge and small lexical units, and on the other, our use of prefabricated material which, though less flexible, also requires less processing.

TL;DR: In this paper, a social exchange model of employee work attitudes and behaviors was used to test a LISREL results revealed that whereas the three organizational justice dimensions (distributive, procedural and interactional) were related to trust in organization only interactional justice was related with trust in supervisor.
Abstract: Data obtained from full-time employees of a public sector organization in India were used to test a social exchange model of employee work attitudes and behaviors. LISREL results revealed that whereas the three organizational justice dimensions (distributive, procedural and interactional) were related to trust in organization only interactional justice was related to trust in supervisor. The results further revealed that relative to the hypothesized fully mediated model a partially mediated model better fitted the data. Trust in organization partially mediated the relationship between distributive and procedural justice and the work attitudes of job satisfaction, turnover intentions, and organizational commitment but fully mediated the relationship between interactional justice and these work attitudes. In contrast, trust in supervisor fully mediated the relationship between interactional justice and the work behaviors of task performance and the individually- and organizationally-oriented dimensions of citizenship behavior.

TL;DR: In this article, the differences between private firms and public agencies are reviewed, and 13 hypotheses are identified on the impact of publicness on organizational environments, goals, structures and managerial values.
Abstract: Critics of New Public Management argue that differences between public and private organizations are so great that business practices should not be transferred to the public sector. In this paper the theoretical arguments on the differences between private firms and public agencies are reviewed, and 13 hypotheses are identified on the impact of publicness on organizational environments, goals, structures and managerial values. Evidence from 34 empirical studies of differences between public agencies and private firms is critically evaluated. Only three of the publicness hypotheses are supported by a majority of the empirical studies: public organizations are more bureaucratic, and public managers are less materialistic and have weaker organizational commitment than their private sector counterparts. However, most of the statistical evidence is derived from studies that use narrow measures of publicness and fail to control for other relevant explanatory variables. Whether the existing evidence understates or overstates the distinctiveness of public agencies is therefore unclear. A research agenda and methods are identified for better comparisons of management in public and private organizations.

TL;DR: The structure, biological function and the regulation of the C/EBP family are reviewed, which have revealed an immense complexity with the potential existence of cell/tissue- and species-specific differences.
Abstract: CCAAT/enhancer binding proteins (C/EBPs) are a family of transcription factors that all contain a highly conserved, basic-leucine zipper domain at the C-terminus that is involved in dimerization and DNA binding. At least six members of the family have been isolated and characterized to date (C/EBPa–C/EBPz), with further diversity produced by the generation of different sized polypeptides, predominantly by differential use of translation initiation sites, and extensive protein–protein interactions both within the family and with other transcription factors. The function of the C/EBPs has recently been investigated by a number of approaches, including studies on mice that lack specific members, and has identified pivotal roles of the family in the control of cellular proliferation and differentiation, metabolism, inflammation and numerous other responses, particularly in hepatocytes, adipocytes and haematopoietic cells. The expression of the C/EBPs is regulated at multiple levels during several physiological and pathophysiological conditions through the action of a range of factors, including hormones, mitogens, cytokines, nutrients and certain toxins. The mechanisms through which the C/EBP members are regulated during such conditions have also been the focus of several recent studies and have revealed an immense complexity with the potential existence of cell/tissue- and species-specific differences. This review deals with the structure, biological function and the regulation of the C/EBP family.

TL;DR: There is no current evidence that psychological debriefing is a useful treatment for the prevention of post traumatic stress disorder after traumatic incidents.
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Over approximately the last last fifteen years early psychological interventions such as psychological 'debriefing' have been increasingly used to treat psychological trauma. While these intervention have become popular and their use spread to several settings - efficacy had largely not been tested empirically. In 1997 a systematic review of single session psychological "debriefing" was undertaken and this subsequently became a protocol and Cochrane Review published in 1998 (Issue2). This update forms the first substantive update of the original review. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of brief psychological debriefing for the management of psychological distress after trauma, and the prevention of post traumatic stress disorder. SEARCH STRATEGY: Electronic searching of MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychLit, PILOTS, Biosis, Pascal, Occ. Safety and Health,SOCIOFILE, CINAHL, PSYCINFO, PSYNDEX, SIGLE, LILACS, CCTR, CINAHL, NRR, Hand search of Journal of Traumatic Stress. Contact with leading researchers. SELECTION CRITERIA: The inclusion criteria for all randomized studies was that they should focus on persons recently (one month or less) exposed to a traumatic event, should consist of a single session only, and that the intervention involve some form of emotional processing/ventilation by encouraging recollection/reworking of the traumatic event accompanied by normalisation of emotional reaction to the event. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: 11 trials fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Quality was generally poor. Data from two trials could not be synthesised. Two trials involved the use of the intervention in an obstetric setting. MAIN RESULTS: Single session individual debriefing did not reduce psychological distress nor prevent the onset of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Those who received the intervention showed no significant short term (3-5 months) in the risk of PTSD (odds ratio 1.22 (95% ci 0.60 to 2.46 )). At one year one trial reported that there was a significantly increased risk of PTSD in those receiving debriefing (odds ratio 2.88 (1.11 to 7.53))odds ratio 95%). There was also no evidence that debriefing reduced general psychological morbidity, depression or anxiety. REVIEWER'S CONCLUSIONS: There is no current evidence that psychological debriefing is a useful treatment for the prevention of post traumatic stress disorder after traumatic incidents. Compulsory debriefing of victims of trauma should cease.

Abstract: This paper presents a measurement of the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background from l = 75 to l = 1025 (~10' to 24) from a combined analysis of four 150 GHz channels in the BOOMERANG experiment. The spectrum contains multiple peaks and minima, as predicted by standard adiabatic inflationary models in which the primordial plasma undergoes acoustic oscillations. These results, in concert with other types of cosmological measurements and theoretical models, significantly constrain the values of ?tot, ?bh2, ?ch2, and ns.

TL;DR: This paper proposes to significantly reduce or eliminate the communication overhead of a broadcasting task by applying the concept of localized dominating sets, which do not require any communication overhead in addition to maintaining positions of neighboring nodes.
Abstract: In a multihop wireless network, each node has a transmission radius and is able to send a message to all of its neighbors that are located within the radius. In a broadcasting task, a source node sends the same message to all the nodes in the network. In this paper, we propose to significantly reduce or eliminate the communication overhead of a broadcasting task by applying the concept of localized dominating sets. Their maintenance does not require any communication overhead in addition to maintaining positions of neighboring nodes. Retransmissions by only internal nodes in a dominating set is sufficient for reliable broadcasting. Existing dominating sets are improved by using node degrees instead of their ids as primary keys. We also propose to eliminate neighbors that already received the message and rebroadcast only if the list of neighbors that might need the message is nonempty. A retransmission after negative acknowledgements scheme is also described. The important features of the proposed algorithms are their reliability (reaching all nodes in the absence of message collisions), significant rebroadcast savings, and their localized and parameterless behavior. The reduction in communication overhead for the broadcasting task is measured experimentally. Dominating set based broadcasting, enhanced by a neighbor elimination scheme and highest degree key, provides reliable broadcast with /spl les/53 percent of node retransmissions (on random unit graphs with 100 nodes) for all average degrees d. Critical d is around 4, with <48 percent for /spl les/3, /spl les/40 percent for d/spl ges/10, and /spl les/20 percent for d/spl ges/25. The proposed methods are better than existing ones in all considered aspects: reliability, rebroadcast savings, and maintenance communication overhead. In particular, the cluster structure is inefficient for broadcasting because of considerable communication overhead for maintaining the structure and is also inferior in terms of rebroadcast savings.

TL;DR: This review summarises recent findings in relation to the structure, function, and regulation of LPL along with its important role in disease.
Abstract: Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) catalyses the hydrolysis of the triacylglycerol component of circulating chylomicrons and very low density lipoproteins, thereby providing non-esterified fatty acids and 2-monoacylglycerol for tissue utilisation. Research carried out over the past two decades have not only established a central role for LPL in the overall lipid metabolism and transport but have also identified additional, non-catalytic functions of the enzyme. Furthermore, abnormalities in LPL function have been found to be associated with a number of pathophysiological conditions, including atherosclerosis, chylomicronaemia, obesity, Alzheimer's disease, and dyslipidaemia associated with diabetes, insulin resistance, and infection. Advances have also been made in relating the various domains in the protein to different functions, and in understanding the mechanisms that are responsible for the changes in LPL expression seen in response to nutritional and other physiological changes, and during disease. This review summarises recent findings in relation to the structure, function, and regulation of LPL along with its important role in disease.

Abstract: A method for skin treatment comprises the steps of delivering at least one pulse of radio frequency power to at least one electrode in order to create an electric field; passing gas through the electric field in order to form plasma from the gas; and applying the plasma to the surface of skin. The amount of radio frequency power may be relatively low such that the application of plasma causes denaturation of collagen within the collagen-containing tissue beneath the skin surface, which may promote the generation of new collagen within the collagen-containing tissue.

TL;DR: Although monoclonal antibodies are currently the most effective method in use today, PCR‐based techniques have proved to be highly effective and versatile in recent laboratory trials and are likely to rapidly displace all other approaches.
Abstract: In many situations prey choice by predators in the field cannot be established or quantified using direct observation. The remains of some prey may be visually identified in the guts and faeces of predators but not all predators ingest such hard remains and even those that do consume them may also ingest soft-bodies prey that leave no recognizable remnants. The result is, at best, a biased picture of prey choice. A range of molecular techniques and applications are reviewed that allow prey remains to be identified, often to the species and even stage level. These techniques, all of which are still in use, include enzyme electrophoresis, a range of immunological approaches using polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies to detect protein epitopes, and recently developed polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods for detecting prey DNA. Analyses may be postmortem, on invertebrate and vertebrate predators collected from the field, or noninvasive assays of the remains in regurgitated bird pellets or vertebrate faeces. It was concluded that although monoclonal antibodies are currently the most effective method in use today, PCR-based techniques have proved to be highly effective and versatile in recent laboratory trials and are likely to rapidly displace all other approaches.

Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises at least two elongate hollow tubes ( 14, 15 ), each having an aperture ( 18 ) at the distal end portion. The inner tube ( 14 ) is disposed within the other tube ( 15 ), and is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis. A cutting tool ( 4 ) is located at the distal end of the tube ( 14 ), and is positioned adjacent to the apertures ( 18 ). A motor ( 5 ) is provided for rotating the inner tube ( 14 ), and the inner tube ( 14 ) has a central lumen ( 21 ) through which tissue cut by the cutting tool ( 4 ) is removed under the action of a source of suction ( 12 ). Heat is supplied to the tissue, prior to, or simultaneously with, the cutting thereof, such that the tissue being cut by the cutting tool ( 4 ) is coagulated tissue. In one embodiment, there is a third tube ( 16 ), and saline is fed to the apertures ( 18 ) via a channel ( 19 ) between the tubes ( 15 ) and ( 16 ). The outer tube ( 16 ) constitutes an active electrode, and the inner tube ( 14 ) constitutes the return electrode of an electrosurgical device. A radio frequency signal, supplied to the electrosurgical device, causes tissue to be coagulated prior to being cut by the cutting tool ( 4 ), resulting in smaller pieces of cut tissue which are easier to remove through the lumen ( 21 ).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report findings from a survey which looked into the impact of service quality dimensions and customer expertise on satisfaction, and find that both core and relational dimensions appear to be linked to customer satisfaction.
Abstract: Understanding the antecedents to and outcomes of customer satisfaction is a critical issue for both academics and bank marketers. Previous research has identified service quality, expectations, disconfirmation, performance, desires, affect and equity as important antecedents of customer satisfaction. The current paper reports findings from a survey which looked into the impact of service quality dimensions and customer expertise on satisfaction. A sample of 167 respondents took part in this study. Findings indicate that both core and relational dimensions of service quality appear to be linked to customer satisfaction. Findings also indicate that expertise is negatively related to satisfaction. The paper discusses implications for bank managers.

TL;DR: In this article, an electrosurgical system consisting of a radio frequency generator, electrosurgery instrument, and a fluid enclosure is described, which is adapted to surround an operation site on the skin of a patient or an incision leading to a cavity surgically created within the patient's body.
Abstract: An electrosurgical system comprises a radio frequency generator ( 1 ), an electrosurgical instrument (E 1 ), and a fluid enclosure ( 42 ). The generator ( 1 ) has a radio frequency output for delivery of power to the electrosurgical instrument (E 1 ) when immersed in an electrically-conductive fluid. The electrosurgical instrument (E 1 ) has an electrode assembly ( 32 ) at the distal end thereof, the electrode assembly comprising a tissue treatment electrode ( 34 ), and a return electrode ( 38 ) axially spaced therefrom in such a manner as to define, in use, a conductive fluid path that completes an electrical circuit between the tissue treatment electrode and the return electrode. The fluid enclosure ( 42 ) is adapted to surround an operation site on the skin of a patient or an incision leading to a cavity surgically created within the patient's body. The fluid enclosure ( 42 ) includes sealing means ( 44 ) for sealing against the patient's tissue, and the fluid enclosure includes at least one port ( 50 a, 52 a ) through which the electrosurgical (E 1 ) is insertable, and through which the electrically-conductive fluid can enter and/or leave the enclosure. The fluid enclosure device of the present invention can also be used to treat tumours within the colon. The enclosure, which includes a proximal and a distal bung, is inserted into the colon in a deflated condition and then inflated with a conductive fluid or gas. The colon can be supported against the pressure of the fluid or gas with a pressure sleeve that has been inserted to surround the region of the colon being treated. An electrosurgical instrument is then inserted into the colon and manipulated to vaporize the tumor.

TL;DR: The authors empirically analyzed the relationship between CEO turnover and corporate performance and found that the negative relationship between turnover and performance became stronger following the Cadbury Code's issuance, and the increase in sensitivity of turnover to performance was concentrated among firms that adopted the Code.
Abstract: In 1992, the Cadbury Committee issued the Code of Best Practice which recommends that boards of U.K. corporations include at least three outside directors and that the positions of chairman and CEO be held by different individuals. The underlying presumption was that these recommendations would lead to improved board oversight. We empirically analyze the relationship between CEO turnover and corporate performance. CEO turnover increased following issuance of the Code; the negative relationship between CEO turnover and performance became stronger following the Code's issuance; and the increase in sensitivity of turnover to performance was concentrated among firms that adopted the Code.

TL;DR: Molecular-genetic analyses of affected human families and experimental models together with neurobiological investigations led to important breakthroughs in the identification of candidate genes and loci, and potential pathophysiological mechanisms for childhood absence epilepsy.
Abstract: Childhood absence epilepsy is an idiopathic, generalized non-convulsive epilepsy with a multifactorial genetic aetiology. Molecular-genetic analyses of affected human families and experimental models, together with neurobiological investigations, have led to important breakthroughs in the identification of candidate genes and loci, and potential pathophysiological mechanisms for this type of epilepsy. Here, we review these results, and compare the human and experimental phenotypes that have been investigated. Continuing efforts and comparisons of this type will help us to elucidate the multigenetic traits and pathophysiology of this form of generalized epilepsy.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyse the relationship between internal and external corporate governance mechanisms and the performance of UK companies within the context of the Cadbury Committee's Code of Best Practice and show that the market for corporate control is an effective governance mechanism that may be regarded as a substitute for the other mechanisms.
Abstract: This paper analyses the relationship between internal and external corporate governance mechanisms and the performance of UK companies within the context of the Cadbury Committee’s Code of Best Practice. The results show, first, that the market for corporate control is an effective governance mechanism that may be regarded as a substitute for the other mechanisms. Second, there is a weak relationship between the internal governance mechanisms and performance. Third, there is also little evidence that with firms in the top and bottom performance deciles have different internal governance characteristics. The results therefore raise questions about the efficacy of imposing prescriptive internal governance mechanisms on companies, particularly given that the market for corporate control has been shown to be an effective means of reducing agency costs.

TL;DR: A study of 76 candidate genes has identified brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) as a potential risk allele that will require additional study to confirm.
Abstract: Identification of the genetic bases for bipolar disorder remains a challenge for the understanding of this disease. Association between 76 candidate genes and bipolar disorder was tested by genotyping 90 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in these genes in 136 parent-proband trios. In this preliminary analysis, SNPs in two genes, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the alpha subunit of the voltage-dependent calcium channel were associated with bipolar disorder at the P<0.05 level. In view of the large number of hypotheses tested, the two nominally positive associations were then tested in independent populations of bipolar patients and only BDNF remains a potential risk gene. In the replication samples, excess transmission of the valine allele of amino acid 66 of BDNF was observed in the direction of the original result in an additional sample of 334 parent-proband trios (T/U=108/87, P=0.066). Resequencing of 29 kb surrounding the BDNF gene identified 44 additional SNPs. Genotyping eight common SNPs identified three additional markers transmitted to bipolar probands at the P < 0.05 level. Strong LD was observed across this region and all adjacent pairwise haplotypes showed excess transmission to the bipolar proband. Analysis of these haplotypes using TRANSMIT revealed a global P value of 0.03. A single haplotype was identified that is shared by both the original dataset and the replication sample that is uniquely marked by both the rare A allele of the original SNP and a novel allele 11.5 kb 3'. Therefore, this study of 76 candidate genes has identified BDNF as a potential risk allele that will require additional study to confirm.

TL;DR: In this article, a brief review of several approaches of "grammar" is presented as the basis for a discussion of culturally produced regularities in the uses of colour; that is, the possibility of extending the use of 'grammar' to colour as a communicational resource.
Abstract: This article presents a brief review of several approaches of ‘grammar’, as the basis for a discussion of culturally produced regularities in the uses of colour; that is, the possibility of extending the use of ‘grammar’ to colour as a communicational resource. Colour is discussed as a semiotic resource - a mode, which, like other modes, is multifunctional in its uses in the culturally located making of signs. The authors make some use of the Jakobson/Halle theory of ‘distinctive features’, highlighting as signifier-resources those of differentiation, saturation, purity, modulation, value and hue. These are treated as features of a grammar of colour rather than as features of colour itself. The article demonstrates its theoretical points through the analysis of several examples and links notions of ‘colour schemes’ and ‘colour harmony’ into the social and cultural concept of grammar in the more traditional sense.

Abstract: Tendon entheses can be classed as fibrous or fibrocartilaginous according to the tissue present at the skeletal attachment site. The former can be "bony" or "periosteal", depending on whether the tendon is directly attached to bone or indirectly to it via the periosteum. At fibrocartilaginous entheses, the uncalcified fibrocartilage dissipates collagen fibre bending and tendon narrowing away from the tidemark; calcified fibrocartilage anchors the tendon to the bone and creates a diffusion barrier between the two. Where there are additional fibrocartilaginous specialisations in the tendon and/or bone next to the enthesis, an "enthesis organ" is created that reduces wear and tear. Little attention has been paid to bone at entheses, despite the obvious bearing this has on the mechanical properties of the interface and the clinical importance of avulsion fractures. Disorders at entheses (enthesopathies) are common and occur in conditions such as diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and the seronegative spondyloarthropathies. They are also commonly seen as sporting injuries such as tennis elbow and jumper's knee.

Abstract: The issues underlying the appropriate matching of pipelines to marketplace needs under conditions of demand volatility and price pressure are examined. The authors describe a scenario where the philosophy of “one size fits all” does not apply to pipeline design, implementation, and control. Research conducted by the authors and others is used to show how appropriate global supply chain strategies can be developed contingent upon market characteristics and which seek simultaneously to achieve higher levels of customer responsiveness at less total cost to the supply chain as a whole. The selection of the right strategy within a supply chain lends itself to a taxonomic approach. We find that three dimensions (leading to eight possible configurations) are adequate for this purpose. These key dimensions are product characteristics, demand characteristics and replenishment lead-time.

Abstract: This paper presents a critique of the multi-attribute models of Fishbein and Ajzen and the social–psychological model of altruistic behaviour proposed by Schwartz. The purpose is to understand better the capacity of these theories of behavioural response to predict and explain observed consumer behaviour. The authors argue that the evaluation of such models cannot proceed in abstract contexts. The development, implementation and maintenance of a kerbside recycling programme by the Cotswold District Council in the UK provided an opportunity to examine the cognition–behaviour links proposed by these theories. Unlike mostother tests of these models, the authors’ research employs independent measures of behaviour as well as behavioural intention and other alleged cognitive precursors of behaviour. The results indicate that cognitive variables, notably intention, fail topredict actual behaviour and that a more elaborate integrated model of recycling is required in order to accomplish this. The research suggests that, at least in the context in which the investigation was undertaken, the intention–behaviour hypothesis, which lies at the heart of so much psychological and marketing theorizing, must be abandoned.
