TL;DR: A deep learning solution to age estimation from a single face image without the use of facial landmarks is proposed and the IMDB-WIKI dataset is introduced, the largest public dataset of face images with age and gender labels.
Abstract: In this paper we propose a deep learning solution to age estimation from a single face image without the use of facial landmarks and introduce the IMDB-WIKI dataset, the largest public dataset of face images with age and gender labels. If the real age estimation research spans over decades, the study of apparent age estimation or the age as perceived by other humans from a face image is a recent endeavor. We tackle both tasks with our convolutional neural networks (CNNs) of VGG-16 architecture which are pre-trained on ImageNet for image classification. We pose the age estimation problem as a deep classification problem followed by a softmax expected value refinement. The key factors of our solution are: deep learned models from large data, robust face alignment, and expected value formulation for age regression. We validate our methods on standard benchmarks and achieve state-of-the-art results for both real and apparent age estimation.

TL;DR: Functional and anatomical evidence exists that spontaneous plasticity can be potentiated by activity, as well as by specific experimental manipulations, which prepare the way to a better understanding of rehabilitation treatments and to the development of new approaches to treat spinal cord injury.
Abstract: Although spontaneous regeneration of lesioned fibres is limited in the adult central nervous system, many people that suffer from incomplete spinal cord injuries show significant functional recovery. This recovery process can go on for several years after the injury and probably depends on the reorganization of circuits that have been spared by the lesion. Synaptic plasticity in pre-existing pathways and the formation of new circuits through collateral sprouting of lesioned and unlesioned fibres are important components of this recovery process. These reorganization processes might occur in cortical and subcortical motor centres, in the spinal cord below the lesion, and in the spared fibre tracts that connect these centres. Functional and anatomical evidence exists that spontaneous plasticity can be potentiated by activity, as well as by specific experimental manipulations. These studies prepare the way to a better understanding of rehabilitation treatments and to the development of new approaches to treat spinal cord injury.

TL;DR: In this article, the 1H-nmr chemical shifts and spin-spin coupling constants of the common amino acid residues were measured in solutions of the linear tetrapeptides H-GlyGly-X-L-Ala-OH in D2O and H2O.
Abstract: The 1H-nmr chemical shifts and the spin–spin coupling constants of the common amino acid residues were measured in solutions of the linear tetrapeptides H-Gly-Gly-X-L-Ala-OH in D2O and H2O, the influence of X on the nmr parameters of the neighboring residues Gly 2 and Ala 4 was investigated. The titration parameters for the side chains of Asp, Glu, Lys, Tyr, and His were determined. The pKa values obtained in D2O, with the use of pH-meter readings with a combination glass electrode uncorrected for istope effects, were 0.06 pH units higher in the acidic range and 0.10 pH units higher in the basic range than the corresponding pKa values in H2O. This suggests that the present data are suitable “random-coil” 1H-nmr parameters for conformational studies of polypeptide chains in D2O and H2O solutions.

TL;DR: In this article, the transverse momentum balance in dijet and γ/Z+jets events is used to measure the jet energy response in the CMS detector, as well as the transversal momentum resolution.
Abstract: Measurements of the jet energy calibration and transverse momentum resolution in CMS are presented, performed with a data sample collected in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36pb−1. The transverse momentum balance in dijet and γ/Z+jets events is used to measure the jet energy response in the CMS detector, as well as the transverse momentum resolution. The results are presented for three different methods to reconstruct jets: a calorimeter-based approach, the ``Jet-Plus-Track'' approach, which improves the measurement of calorimeter jets by exploiting the associated tracks, and the ``Particle Flow'' approach, which attempts to reconstruct individually each particle in the event, prior to the jet clustering, based on information from all relevant subdetectors
