Abstract: In this paper an approach to identify delay phenomena from time series is developed. We show that it is possible to perform a reliable time delay identification by using quantifiers derived from information theory, more precisely, permutation entropy and permutation statistical complexity. These quantifiers show clear extrema when the embedding delay τ of the symbolic reconstruction matches the characteristic time delay τ(S) of the system. Numerical data originating from a time delay system based on the well-known Mackey-Glass equations operating in the chaotic regime were used as test beds. We show that our method is straightforward to apply and robust to additive observational and dynamical noise. Moreover, we find that the identification of the time delay is even more efficient in a noise environment. Our permutation approach is also able to recover the time delay in systems with low feedback rate or high nonlinearity.

Abstract: The generalized zeroth law of thermodynamics indicates that the physical temperature in nonextensive statistical mechanics is different from the inverse of the Lagrange multiplier, beta. This leads to modifications of some of thermodynamic relations for nonextensive systems. Here, taking the first law of thermodynamics and the Legendre transform structure as the basic premises, it is found that Clausius definition of the thermodynamic entropy has to be appropriately modified, and accordingly the thermodynamic relations proposed by Tsallis, Mendes and Plastino [Physica A 261 (1998) 534] are also to be rectified. It is shown that the definition of specific heat and the equation of state remain form invariant. As an application, the classical gas model is reexamined and, in marked contrast with the previous result obtained by Abe [Phys. Lett. A 263 (1999) 424: Erratum A 267 (2000) 456] using the unphysical temperature and the unphysical pressure, the specific heat and the equation of state are found to be similar to those in ordinary extensive thermodynamics.

Abstract: Low-order nonconforming Galerkin methods will be analyzed for second-order elliptic equations subjected to Robin, Dirichlet, or Neumann boundary conditions. Both simplicial and rectangular elements will be considered in two and three dimensions. The simplicial elements will be based on P 1 , as for conforming elements; however, it is necessary to introduce new elements in the rectangular case. Optimal order error estimates are demonstrated in all cases with respect to a broken norm in H 1 (Ω) and in the Neumann and Robin cases in L 2 (Ω).

Abstract: A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson produced in association with a top-quark pair, , is presented. The analysis uses 20.3 fb(-1) of pp collision data at , collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during 2012. The search is designed for the decay mode and uses events containing one or two electrons or muons. In order to improve the sensitivity of the search, events are categorised according to their jet and b-tagged jet multiplicities. A neural network is used to discriminate between signal and background events, the latter being dominated by +jets production. In the single-lepton channel, variables calculated using a matrix element method are included as inputs to the neural network to improve discrimination of the irreducible background. No significant excess of events above the background expectation is found and an observed (expected) limit of 3.4 (2.2) times the Standard Model cross section is obtained at 95 % confidence level. The ratio of the measured signal cross section to the Standard Model expectation is found to be assuming a Higgs boson mass of 125 Gev.

Abstract: The ATLAS Inner Detector is a composite tracking system consisting of silicon pixels, silicon strips and straw tubes in a 2 T magnetic field. Its installation was completed in August 2008 and the detector took part in data-taking with single LHC beams and cosmic rays. The initial detector operation, hardware commissioning and in-situ calibrations are described. Tracking performance has been measured with 7.6 million cosmic-ray events, collected using a tracking trigger and reconstructed with modular pattern-recognition and fitting software. The intrinsic hit efficiency and tracking trigger efficiencies are close to 100%. Lorentz angle measurements for both electrons and holes, specific energy-loss calibration and transition radiation turn-on measurements have been performed. Different alignment techniques have been used to reconstruct the detector geometry. After the initial alignment, a transverse impact parameter resolution of 22.1 +/- 0.9 mu m and a relative momentum resolution sigma (p) /p=(4.83 +/- 0.16)x10(-4) GeV(-1)xp (T) have been measured for high momentum tracks.
