TL;DR: It is established that water-mediated selenium hydrogen-bonding interactions are ubiquitous in proteins and the number of these interactions observed in the PDB is more than that of direct Se hydrogen-Bonding present there.
Abstract: High-resolution X-ray crystallography and two-dimensional NMR studies demonstrate that water-mediated conventional hydrogen-bonding interactions (N-H···N, O-H···N, etc.) bridging two or more amino acid residues contribute to the stability of proteins and protein-ligand complexes. In this work, we have investigated single water-mediated selenium hydrogen-bonding interactions (unconventional hydrogen-bonding) between amino acid residues in proteins through extensive protein data bank (PDB) analysis coupled with gas-phase spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculation of a model complex consisting of indole, dimethyl selenide, and water. Here, indole and dimethyl selenide represent the amino acid residues tryptophan and selenomethionine, respectively. The current investigation demonstrates that the most stable structure of the model complex observed in the IR spectroscopy mimics single water-mediated selenium hydrogen-bonded structural motifs present in the crystal structures of proteins. The present work establishes that water-mediated Se hydrogen-bonding interactions are ubiquitous in proteins and the number of these interactions observed in the PDB is more than that of direct Se hydrogen-bonds present there.

TL;DR: The combined results of the DCFH-DA dye and Hoechst 33342/PI nuclear staining assays show that they possess a dual mode of action: They induced apoptotic cell death, attributable to the tin-assisted generation of reactive oxygen species.
Abstract: Metal complexes with organelle specificity and potent but selective cytotoxicity are highly desirable. A novel series of triphenylstannyl 4-((arylimino)methyl)benzoates (2-8) were obtained by the reactions of triphenylstannyl 4-formylbenzoate [Ph3Sn(L1)] 1 with primary aromatic amines. Two representative compounds (10, 11) were also synthesized by reacting aqua-triphenylstannyl 2-formylbenzoate [Ph3Sn(L9)(H2O)] (9) with aniline and p-fluoroaniline, respectively. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and 1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR spectroscopy, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction for compounds 5, 7-11 and three pro-ligands. The in vitro cytotoxic activities of 1-11 were assessed using the MTT tetrazolium dye assay against HeLa (human cervical) and MDA-MB-231 (breast) cancer cells, with IC50 values revealing high activity. Compared to cisplatin, compounds 1-11 exhibited enhanced cytotoxic efficacy, indicating their potential as potent anticancer agents. Among these, 1 and 5 demonstrated maximum inhibition in HeLa cells, with negligible effect on normal human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells. The combined results of the DCFH-DA dye and Hoechst 33342/PI nuclear staining assays, along with flow cytometry analysis, show that they possess a dual mode of action: They induced apoptotic cell death, attributable to the tin-assisted generation of reactive oxygen species. Cell cycle analyses indicated that compounds 1 and 5 exhibit cell growth inhibition and may cause turbulences in the G1 and G2/M phases.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of Zn substitution on densification, microstructure, microwave and broad band dielectric properties of MgTiO3 ceramics were investigated.
Abstract: In the present study the effect of Zn substitution on densification, microstructure, microwave and broad band dielectric properties of MgTiO3 ceramics were investigated. The (Mg1−x Zn x )TiO3 (x = 0.01–0.07) ceramics have been prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The sintering conditions were optimized to obtain the best dielectric properties with maximum relative densities. The microwave dielectric properties are heavily influenced by the amount of x concentration. The optimum dielectric properties of e r ~ 17.34, Q × f o ~ 274 THz, τ f ~ -40.3 ppm/oC is obtained for (Mg0.95Zn0.05)TiO3 ceramics sintered at 1275 °C. The broad band dielectric properties of (Mg0.95Zn0.05)TiO3 ceramics were measured in the frequency range of 1–100 MHz, and temperature range of 133–483 K. Interestingly, the broad band dielectric properties show relaxation behaviour with frequency. The higher temperature dielectric spectrum of (Mg0.95Zn0.05)TiO3 (MZT) ceramics displayed a distinct dispersion, which is shifting towards a lower frequency side. The observed dielectric relaxation behavior is analyzed using Cole–Cole plot. Furthermore, voltage dependent capacitance behavior at different frequencies is studied for the MZT sample, and it’s interesting to note that the capacitance is stable with the variation in voltage. The electrical conductivity study is carried out as a function of frequency and temperature for MZT sample and the activation energy is calculated by using Arrhenius equation, which is found to be 0.07 eV at 10 MHz. The obtained dielectric response of MZT ceramics are suitable for dielectric resonator and type-1 RF capacitor applications.

TL;DR: Results demonstrate that the enzyme activities, microbial population as well as most of the physico-chemical characteristics of soils followed the trend permanent agriculture on plain lands>terrace land agriculture>‘slash and burn’ type of shifting agriculture.
Abstract: Dehydrogenase and urease activities, bacterial and fungal populations and physicochemical characteristics of maize (Zea mays L.) field soils have been studied for one crop cycle. A comparison has been made among soils of three different agricultural systemsviz permanent agriculture on plain lands in valleys, recently introduced terrace land agriculture and age old ‘slash and burn’ type of shifting agriculture on slopes. Results demonstrate that the enzyme activities, microbial population as well as most of the physico-chemical characteristics of soils followed the trend permanent agriculture on plain lands>terrace land agriculture>‘slash and burn’ type of shifting agriculture. Moisture and nutrient levels and topography of the lands were found to be major factors responsible for the trend.
