TL;DR: The intention of this paper is to share one of the assessment practices during 2011–2013 where the medium of expression is as chosen by the students; this method of assessment is called as “open assessment”.
Abstract: It is well accepted that learners even at academic institutions come with different abilities and flavours. Personalising the education is one of the 16 grand challenges as per the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Measuring the outcomes of an education, progress of learning, etc., plays an important role in generating personalised feedbacks and recommendations in personalised learning environments facilitated by either an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) or an expert academician in conventional institutions. Any assessment would require a medium of expression to measure the achievements/outcomes of learning. Most common among them are writing a set of reasoning statements, writing algorithms, diagrams/sketches, occasional viva voce, etc.. The intention of this paper is to share one of our assessment practices during 2011–2013 where the medium of expression is as chosen by the students; we call this method of assessment as “open assessment”. We also share the techniques of recording assessment data, policies to ensure student‘s participation in assessments and grading philosophy for such assessment methods. Finally, we present a short analysis to highlight advantages and disadvantages of this method when practiced in institutions with academic autonomy in India.

TL;DR: This paper proposes query language interface for such knowledge representation of ubiquitous objects, which enables object aware capability and hence the object intelligence.
Abstract: The vision of ubiquitous computing (UC) has been described in terms of the disappearing computers To achieve this invisibility, the interactions between various objects of daily life should be as free as possible from explicit human administration UC will enable the new breed of applications and systems resulting in to a smart world (SW) in which computational intelligence is distributed throughout the physical environment to provide services to people To embed such autonomic behavior in every day objects around us, it is necessary to build knowledge repository, which helps objects in smart world to monitor, plan, analyze and execute autonomously like human being In this paper author proposes query language interface for such knowledge representation of ubiquitous objects, which enables object aware capability and hence the object intelligence

TL;DR: A diverse resources hosting system CRETAL (Compiler of Resources in Engineering &Technology to Aid Learning) with rich set of unique annotation tools are described to address the challenges of the modern students to query, access, extract, connect, process and share the important concepts from the different form of the learning materials created and adapted by the teacher.
Abstract: The increased variety of learning resources, like e-books with modern collaborative tools, video lectures of different teachers across the world, lively discussion boards etc. have substantially affected learning styles of students. Having accepted such forms of learning materials, conventional academic setups are in desperate need to make learning activities efficient, effective and meaningful. In this paper a diverse resources hosting system CRETAL (Compiler of Resources in Engineering &Technology to Aid Learning) with rich set of unique annotation tools are described to address the challenges of the modern students to query, access, extract, connect, process and share the important concepts from the different form of the learning materials created and adapted by the teacher. In addition to the system description, we also present the usability study along with the impact on students learning and teacher's decision when CRETAL was adapted in few undergraduate course using Educational Data mining and learning analytics.

TL;DR: In this paper, carbon nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple traditional method and the structural characterization was done using SEM has revealed the average size of the particles in the range of 80.3-88.6 nm.
Abstract: The demand for non-renewable energy resources is created due to the increase in number of vehicles and its pollution problems. This has been led to search for alternative and renewable energy resources. Different methods have been adopted to reduce emissions and to increase the efficiency of engines include, modification in engine, fuel alteration, and exhaust gas treatment. Recently it was reported that blending of nanoparticles with biodiesel to has brought about alteration in chemical and electrical properties which resulted in increased engine efficiency and decreased emission level. In the current study, carbon nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple traditional method. The structural characterization was done using SEM has revealed the average size of the particles in the range of 80.3–88.6 nm. The blend of carbon nanoparticle-biodiesel was utilized to evaluate the engine characteristics. Due to nano-additive biodiesel blend, a significant enhancement in the brake thermal efficiency with substantial reduction in the harmful pollutants from the engine was observed. Maximum brake thermal efficiency of 25 % was obtained for biodiesel blended with 50 mg of carbon nanoparticles with considerable reduction in hydrocarbons, smoke capacity, NOx emissions compared to 25 mg blend, biodiesel and diesel.
