TL;DR: In this paper, a multidisciplinary argument for the concept of connected extreme events is presented, and vantage points and approaches for producing climate information useful in guiding decisions about them are discussed.
Abstract: Extreme weather and climate events and their impacts can occur in complex combinations, an interaction shaped by physical drivers and societal forces. In these situations, governance, markets and other decision-making structures—together with population exposure and vulnerability—create nonphysical interconnections among events by linking their impacts, to positive or negative effect. Various anthropogenic actions can also directly affect the severity of events, further complicating these feedback loops. Such relationships are rarely characterized or considered in physical-sciences-based research contexts. Here, we present a multidisciplinary argument for the concept of connected extreme events, and we suggest vantage points and approaches for producing climate information useful in guiding decisions about them. The impacts of extreme weather and climate can be amplified by physical interactions among events and across a complex set of societal factors. This Perspective discusses the concept and challenge of connected extreme events, exploring research approaches and decision-making strategies.

TL;DR: A genetic algorithm approach to the problem of task scheduling for multiprocessor systems that requires minimal problem specific information and no problem specific operators or repair mechanisms and is able to automatically adapt to changing targets.
Abstract: We have developed a genetic algorithm (GA) approach to the problem of task scheduling for multiprocessor systems. Our approach requires minimal problem specific information and no problem specific operators or repair mechanisms. Key features of our system include a flexible, adaptive problem representation and an incremental fitness function. Comparison with traditional scheduling methods indicates that the GA is competitive in terms of solution quality if it has sufficient resources to perform its search. Studies in a nonstationary environment show the GA is able to automatically adapt to changing targets.

TL;DR: In this paper, free standing structures of Al-based nanostructured composite with carbon nanotubes as second phase particles has been synthesized by plasma spray forming technique and optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy has been carried out to analyze the composite structure and to verify the retention of carbon Nanotubes.
Abstract: A trend has been perceived in the field of composite materials to employ carbon nanotubes as reinforcement in synthesizing composites of unique properties. In this endeavor, free standing structures of Al-based nanostructured composite with carbon nanotubes as second phase particles has been synthesized by plasma spray forming technique. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy has been carried out to analyze the composite structure and to verify the retention of carbon nanotubes. Besides, density and microhardness measurements have been performed to understand the effect of carbon nanotube reinforcement on the mechanical properties of the composite. The characterization affirms the presence of unmelted and chemically unreacted carbon nanotubes in the composite. Moreover, the composite experienced an increase in relative microhardness due to the presence of carbon nanotube.

Abstract: The decision in the Brown v Board of Education (1954) case was one of the most significant events in American history in general and specifically in the educational system Brown is so highly regarded because it held promise of placing America on the path toward equitable treatment of all of its citizens and laid the foundation for the civil rights and disabilities rights movements Fifty years after Brown, however, it is very clear that many of the promises of Brown have not been fulfilled with regard to students of color living in urban settings, students who live in poverty, and students with disabilities This article will discuss (a) the state of urban schools in the post-Brown era, (b) special education in the post-Brown era, (c) disproportionality and resegregation of African American students, (d) the double jeopardy of disproportionality and urban school failure, (e) the reasons why Brown is not working from the perspectives of urban community leaders, and (f) recommendations for fufilling the p

TL;DR: This Policy Forum examines a range of issues associated with salvage harvesting policies after major natural disturbances such as fire, windstorms, and volcanic eruptions to help guide where, when, how, and if salvage harvesting takes place.
Abstract: The authors of this Policy Forum examine a range of issues associated with salvage harvesting policies after major natural disturbances such as fire, windstorms, and volcanic eruptions. Although natural disturbances can have important benefits for ecosystems, salvage harvesting can have major negative impacts on ecosystem recovery, the persistence of elements of biota, and the maintenance of key ecological processes. Better informed policies are needed to guide where, when, how, and if salvage harvesting takes place.
