TL;DR: The purpose of this report is to provide histology‐specific incidence rates within single‐year age groups, stratified by sex and race, among children.
Abstract: Background. Rates of cancer in children usually are presented in 5-year age groups, despite large variations of incidence within these groups. The purpose of this report is to provide histology-specific incidence rates within single-year age groups, stratified by sex and race, among children. Methods. Data from the National Cancer Institute's SEER Program were used to calculate incidence rates among children younger than 15 years of age at diagnosis. The SEER population denominator file was modified to allow calculation of rates within single years of age. Results. Large differences in rates within 5-year age groups were found for many histologic types. Retinobiastoma and Wilms' tumor, for instance, had up to eight-fold differences. Substantial differences also were observed for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, neuroblastoma, Hodgkin's disease, acute lymphoid leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, and osteosarcoma. In general, rates were higher among males than females, although female rates were often higher among young children. Rates of white children were generally higher than those of black children, especially during the first 5 years of life. Embryonal tumors comprised the majority of neoplasms during the first 2 years of life. Conclusion. Important demographic patterns of cancer incidence in children are obscured when data are summarized into 5-year age groups. Cancer 1995;75:2186–95.

TL;DR: This Account focuses on the recent and systematic effort in the development of generic scanning probe lithography (SPL)-based methodologies to produce nanopatterns of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and the principle of these procedures and the critical steps in controlling local tip-surface interactions are discussed.
Abstract: This Account focuses on our recent and systematic effort in the development of generic scanning probe lithography (SPL)-based methodologies to produce nanopatterns of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The key to achieving high spatial precision is to keep the tip−surface interactions strong and local. The approaches used include two AFM-based methods, nanoshaving and nanografting, which rely on the local force, and two STM-based techniques, electron-induced diffusion and desorption, which use tunneling electrons for fabrication. In this Account we discuss the principle of these procedures and the critical steps in controlling local tip−surface interactions. The advantages of SPL will be illustrated through various examples of production and modification of SAM nanopatterns and their potential applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of lower LDL cholesterol levels that were mediated by variants in PCSK9, HMGCR, or both on the risk of cardiovascular events and risk of diabetes were compared.
Abstract: BackgroundPharmacologic inhibitors of proprotein convertase subtilisin–kexin type 9 (PCSK9) are being evaluated in clinical trials for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. The effect of lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels by inhibiting PCSK9 on the risk of cardiovascular events or diabetes is unknown. MethodsWe used genetic scores consisting of independently inherited variants in the genes encoding PCSK9 and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl–coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR; the target of statins) as instruments to randomly assign 112,772 participants from 14 studies, with 14,120 cardiovascular events and 10,635 cases of diabetes, to groups according to the number of LDL cholesterol–lowering alleles that they had inherited. We compared the effects of lower LDL cholesterol levels that were mediated by variants in PCSK9, HMGCR, or both on the risk of cardiovascular events and the risk of diabetes. ResultsVariants in PCSK9 and HMGCR were associated with nearly identical protective effects on th...

TL;DR: The VA NSQIP methods and risk models in general and vascular surgery were fully applicable to private sector hospitals and 30-day postoperative morbidity or mortality in PS hospitals was reduced with the implementation of theNSQIP.
Abstract: Background:The Veterans Affairs ’ (VA) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) has been associated with significant reductions in postoperative morbidity and mortality. We sought to determine if NSQIP methods and risk models were applicable to private sector (PS) hospitals and if imple
