Abstract: This chapter focuses on design and development research, a type of inquiry unique to the instructional design and technology field dedicated to the creation of new knowledge and the validation of existing practice. We first define this kind of research and provide an overview of its two main categories—research on products and tools and research on design and development models. Then, we concentrate on recent design and development research (DDR) by describing 11 studies published in the literature. The five product and tool studies reviewed include research on comprehensive development projects, studies of particular design and development phases, and research on tool development and use. The six model studies reviewed include research leading to new or enhanced ID models, model validation and model use research. Finally, we summarize this new work in terms of the problems it addresses, the settings and participants examined, the research methodologies employed used, and the role evaluation plays in these studies.

Abstract: Objective: To determine the validity and reliability of the Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) neuropathy score (CMTNS) in patients with inherited neuropathy. Background: Natural history studies and potential treatment trials for patients with various forms of CMT are limited by the lack of quantitative methodologies to monitor disease progression. Most cases of CMT can be considered length-dependent axonal neuropathies because disability for even the demyelinating forms correlates with length-dependent axonal degeneration. The total neuropathy score (TNS) is a validated composite measure of disability in length-dependent axonal neuropathies but is weighted toward predominantly sensory neuropathies. Thus, the authors have devised a CMTNS, modified from the TNS, to provide a single measure to quantify CMT disability. Methods: The authors measured inter- and intrainvestigator reliability of the CMTNS and performed a validation of the score with the Neuropathy Impairment Score (NIS), patient self-assessment scores, an ambulation index, and other measures of disability. Results: Inter- and intrainvestigator reliability was more than 95% in the 60 patients evaluated. Patients could be divided into mild (CMTNS, ≤10), moderate (CMTNS, 11 to 20), and severe (CMTNS, ≥21) categories and demonstrated excellent correlations among all measures of disability. Conclusion: The Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) neuropathy score is a validated measure of length-dependent axonal and demyelinating CMT disability and can be investigated as an end point for longitudinal studies and clinical trials of CMT.

Abstract: A study is presented of the mass and spin-parity of the new boson recently observed at the LHC at a mass near 125 GeV. An integrated luminosity of 17.3 fb^(-1), collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, is used. The measured mass in the ZZ channel, where both Z bosons decay to e or μ pairs, is 126.2±0.6(stat)±0.2(syst) GeV. The angular distributions of the lepton pairs in this channel are sensitive to the spin-parity of the boson. Under the assumption of spin 0, the present data are consistent with the pure scalar hypothesis, while disfavoring the pure pseudoscalar hypothesis.

Abstract: ItL-A antigens prepared from human lymphoid cells by treatment of either intact cells or membranes with papain or nonionic detergents have been shown to contain two polypeptide chains. The antigen prepared by treatment of cells or cell membranes with papain contains polypeptide chains with a mol wt of about 34,000 and 11,000 (1), whereas the detergent-solubilized antigen has polypeptides of tool wt about 43,000 and 11,000 (2). Another membrane-bound protein found on human lymphocytes is ~2-microglobulin, an 11,700 mol wt polypeptide which was first isolated from the urine of patients with renal tubular disease (3) and which has subsequently been sequenced and shown to possess a moderate degree of sequence homology to constant region domains of immunoglobulin polypeptide chains (4, 5).
