A Baseline and Vision of Ultrasonic Guided Wave Inspection Potential

TLDR
In this article, the authors provide a vision of ultrasonic guided wave inspection potential as we move forward into the new millennium and provide a brief description of the sensor and software technology that will make ultrasonic guidance wave inspection commonplace in the next century.
Abstract
Ultrasonic guided wave inspection is expanding rapidly to many different areas of manufacturing and in-service inspection. The purpose of this paper is to provide a vision of ultrasonic guided wave inspection potential aswe move forward into the new millennium. An increased understanding of the basic physics and wave mechanics associated with guided wave inspection has led to an increase in practical nondestructive evaluation and inspection problems. Some fundamental concepts and a number of different applications that are currently being considered will be presented in the paper along with a brief description of the sensor and software technology that will make ultrasonic guided wave inspection commonplace in the next century.

Guided wave helical ultrasonic tomography of pipes

TL;DR: A new variation called helical ultrasound tomography (HUT) is described that uses guided ultrasonic waves along with tomographic reconstruction algorithms that have been developed by seismologists for what they call "cross borehole" tomography.
Journal ArticleDOI

Machine learning for wind turbine blades maintenance management

TL;DR: The main novelty presented in this paper has been to apply an approach for detecting and diagnosing the delamination WTB based on signal processing of guided waves, and multiclass pattern recognition using machine learning.

Scattering of the fundamental anti-symmetric Lamb wave at delaminations in composite laminates.

TL;DR: The results suggest that care is required to use bonded masses to simulate delamination damage for verifying and optimizing damage characterization techniques, and help to further advance the use of the A(0) Lamb wave for damage detection and characterization.
Journal ArticleDOI

Damage Detection in Thin Composite Laminates Using Piezoelectric Phased Sensor Arrays and Guided Lamb Wave Interrogation

TL;DR: In this article, two models were developed to characterize the Lamb wave propagation properties of orthotropic panels, and experiments were conducted to empirically characterize the wave propagation behavior in a manufactured laminate.
Journal ArticleDOI

Defect imaging with guided waves in a pipe

TL;DR: A defect imaging technique is developed in this study to overcome the complexities of guided wave inspection and provide a defect image at the moment when an incident wave arrives at a defect region, which is based on a time-reversal technique.

Ultrasonic Waves in Solid Media

TL;DR: In this article, the theory of elasticity was introduced and basic formulas and concepts in complex variables in the theory and application of wave propagation were discussed. But the authors did not consider the effects of wave scattering on the wave propagation experiments.
