TLDR
In this paper, the authors focus on the role of agriculture and fishing in the European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and show that agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure.
Abstract
Agriculture and fishing are the primary source of almost all our food, as well as of many other products, so remain vital activities even though their share in the economy is small and in continuous decline. Partly for this reason public policy in these areas is almost entirely integrated at European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Forestry policies are also heavily affected by EU-level decision-making. As agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure, it is agriculture that will receive the greatest attention here.

Demythifying contract farming: Evidence from rural South Africa

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that contract farming is not a panacea for small-scale farmers in South Africa, and propose a combination of qualitative and econometric analyses.

Comparison Study of Swarm Intelligence Techniques for the Annual Crop Planning Problem

TL;DR: This study investigates the effectiveness of employing three relatively new swarm intelligence (SI) metaheuristic techniques in determining the solutions to the ACP problem with case study from an existing irrigation scheme, showing that each of the three SI algorithms provides superior solutions for the case studied.

Mapping and valuation of South Africa's ecosystem services: A local perspective

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used locally-sourced and other relevant information to value ecosystem services provided by South Africa's terrestrial, freshwater and estuarine habitats, and preliminary estimates suggest that these are worth at least R275 billion per annum to South Africans.

Soil removal as a decontamination practice and radiocesium accumulation in tadpoles in rice paddies at Fukushima.

TL;DR: The results suggest that decontamination practice can reduce radiocesium concentrations in both soil and tadpoles, however, at the decontaminated paddy, radiocESium concentrations became 3.8 times greater one year afterDecontamination, which indicates that monitoring the subsequent movement of radiocisium in rice paddies and surrounding areas is essential for examining contamination propagation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Survey of the livestock ticks of the North West province, South Africa

TL;DR: Associated serology data show that most herds sampled in areas endemic for babesiosis and anaplasmosis in the north-eastern region are endemically unstable and at risk to these tick-borne diseases should vector control measures become ineffective.

A rapid and sensitive method for the quantitation of microgram quantities of protein utilizing the principle of protein-dye binding

TL;DR: This assay is very reproducible and rapid with the dye binding process virtually complete in approximately 2 min with good color stability for 1 hr with little or no interference from cations such as sodium or potassium nor from carbohydrates such as sucrose.

A revised medium for rapid growth and bio assays with tobacco tissue cultures

TL;DR: In vivo redox biosensing resolves the spatiotemporal dynamics of compartmental responses to local ROS generation and provide a basis for understanding how compartment-specific redox dynamics may operate in retrograde signaling and stress 67 acclimation in plants.
