TLDR
In this paper, the authors focus on the role of agriculture and fishing in the European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and show that agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure.
Abstract
Agriculture and fishing are the primary source of almost all our food, as well as of many other products, so remain vital activities even though their share in the economy is small and in continuous decline. Partly for this reason public policy in these areas is almost entirely integrated at European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Forestry policies are also heavily affected by EU-level decision-making. As agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure, it is agriculture that will receive the greatest attention here.

Atmospheric discharge and dispersion of radionuclides during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Part II : Verification of the source term and analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion

TL;DR: The analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion and deposition suggests that the present distribution of a large amount of (137)Cs deposition in eastern Japan was produced primarily by four events that occurred on March 12, 15-16, 20, and 21-23.

Phosphorus flows and balances of the European Union Member States.

TL;DR: Although wide-ranging variation between countries, generally phosphorus use in EU-27 was characterized by relatively large dependency on (primary) imports, long-term accumulation in agricultural soils, especially in west European countries, providing ample opportunities for improvement.

Rights-based fisheries governance: from fishing rights to human rights

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that more secure, less vulnerable fishers make more effective and motivated fishery managers in the context of participatory or rights-based fisheries governance, and further suggest that insecurity among fishers living in poverty can be most effectively addressed by social and political development that invokes the existing legal framework supporting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

A high incidence of species substitution and mislabelling detected in meat products sold in South Africa

TL;DR: Overall, this study confirmed that the mislabelling of processed meats is commonplace in South Africa and not only violates food labelling regulations, but also poses economic, religious, ethical and health impacts.

Development of multiple-species 1km×1km resolution hourly basis emissions inventory for Japan

TL;DR: In this article, a new atmospheric emissions inventory, called "EAGrid2000-Japan" was developed to provide reliable fundamental data for studies of the long-range transport of air pollution in the East Asia region, specifically targeting Japan, in the year 2000.

Relationship between in vitro production of auxins by rhizobacteria and their growth-promoting activities in Brassica juncea L.

TL;DR: Highly significant correlations between L-TRP-derived auxin production by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in vitro and grain yield, number of pods, and number of branches per plant of B. juncea were found.

Enhancing plant phosphorus use efficiency for sustainable cropping.

TL;DR: A more comprehensive understanding of the molecular and physiological basis of P uptake, transportation and utilization is leading to formulation of strategies aimed at developing better P efficient cultivars suited for sustainable cropping with less P fertilizer inputs.

Profit efficiency among bangladeshi rice farmers

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provided a direct measure of production efficiency of the Bangladeshi rice farmers using a stochastic profit frontier and inefficiency effects model and found that the mean level of profit efficiency is 77% suggesting that an estimated 23% of the profit is lost due to a combination of technical, allocative and scale inefficiency.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genetic basis of yield as viewed from a crop physiologist's perspective

TL;DR: The need to use crop physiology approaches to analyse components of yield in order to reliably identify the genetic basis of yield is discussed and problems associated with this approach are discussed.
