TLDR
In this paper, the authors focus on the role of agriculture and fishing in the European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and show that agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure.
Abstract
Agriculture and fishing are the primary source of almost all our food, as well as of many other products, so remain vital activities even though their share in the economy is small and in continuous decline. Partly for this reason public policy in these areas is almost entirely integrated at European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Forestry policies are also heavily affected by EU-level decision-making. As agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure, it is agriculture that will receive the greatest attention here.

Atmospheric discharge and dispersion of radionuclides during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Part II : Verification of the source term and analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion

TL;DR: The analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion and deposition suggests that the present distribution of a large amount of (137)Cs deposition in eastern Japan was produced primarily by four events that occurred on March 12, 15-16, 20, and 21-23.

Phosphorus flows and balances of the European Union Member States.

TL;DR: Although wide-ranging variation between countries, generally phosphorus use in EU-27 was characterized by relatively large dependency on (primary) imports, long-term accumulation in agricultural soils, especially in west European countries, providing ample opportunities for improvement.

Rights-based fisheries governance: from fishing rights to human rights

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that more secure, less vulnerable fishers make more effective and motivated fishery managers in the context of participatory or rights-based fisheries governance, and further suggest that insecurity among fishers living in poverty can be most effectively addressed by social and political development that invokes the existing legal framework supporting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

A high incidence of species substitution and mislabelling detected in meat products sold in South Africa

TL;DR: Overall, this study confirmed that the mislabelling of processed meats is commonplace in South Africa and not only violates food labelling regulations, but also poses economic, religious, ethical and health impacts.

Development of multiple-species 1km×1km resolution hourly basis emissions inventory for Japan

TL;DR: In this article, a new atmospheric emissions inventory, called "EAGrid2000-Japan" was developed to provide reliable fundamental data for studies of the long-range transport of air pollution in the East Asia region, specifically targeting Japan, in the year 2000.

The Importance of Multiple Cropping in Increasing World Food Supplies

TL;DR: In this article, the authors define multiple cropping as "a form of cropping where total production from a unit area of land in a farming year is achieved through growing crops simultaneously, sole crops in sequence, or a combination of mixed and sole crop in sequence".

Discussion of methods of investigating the food of fishes, with reference to a preliminary study of the prey of Gobiusculus flavescens (Gobiidae)

TL;DR: The validity, reliability and practicability of different methods for the investigation of stomach contents of a small, plankton-eating fish are discussed and a logarithmic version of Shorigin's index is proposed as a replacement for Ivlev's food selection index.

Soil organic carbon and nitrogen in a Mollisol in central Ohio as affected by tillage and land use

TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of the literature of NT effect on SOC stocks, using meta-analysis, suggested that NT would have an overall positive effect on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration rate but with a greater variability of what was previously reported.

Exchangeability of Soil Potassium in the Sand, Silt, and Clay Fractions as Influenced by the Nature of the Complementary Exchangeable Cation

TL;DR: In this paper, the results obtained on four soils taken from the same stock samples used by Chandler et al. (2) in their greenhouse studies on the release of potassium upon continuous cropping with Ladino clover were investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular characterisation and origin of the Coffea arabica L. genome.

TL;DR: Results clearly suggest that C. arabica is an amphidiploid formed by hybridisation between C. eugenioides and C. canephora, or ecotypes related to these diploid species, and indicate low divergence between the two constituent genomes of C. Arabica.
