TLDR
In this paper, the authors focus on the role of agriculture and fishing in the European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and show that agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure.
Abstract
Agriculture and fishing are the primary source of almost all our food, as well as of many other products, so remain vital activities even though their share in the economy is small and in continuous decline. Partly for this reason public policy in these areas is almost entirely integrated at European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Forestry policies are also heavily affected by EU-level decision-making. As agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure, it is agriculture that will receive the greatest attention here.

Atmospheric discharge and dispersion of radionuclides during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Part II : Verification of the source term and analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion

TL;DR: The analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion and deposition suggests that the present distribution of a large amount of (137)Cs deposition in eastern Japan was produced primarily by four events that occurred on March 12, 15-16, 20, and 21-23.

Phosphorus flows and balances of the European Union Member States.

TL;DR: Although wide-ranging variation between countries, generally phosphorus use in EU-27 was characterized by relatively large dependency on (primary) imports, long-term accumulation in agricultural soils, especially in west European countries, providing ample opportunities for improvement.

Rights-based fisheries governance: from fishing rights to human rights

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that more secure, less vulnerable fishers make more effective and motivated fishery managers in the context of participatory or rights-based fisheries governance, and further suggest that insecurity among fishers living in poverty can be most effectively addressed by social and political development that invokes the existing legal framework supporting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

A high incidence of species substitution and mislabelling detected in meat products sold in South Africa

TL;DR: Overall, this study confirmed that the mislabelling of processed meats is commonplace in South Africa and not only violates food labelling regulations, but also poses economic, religious, ethical and health impacts.

Development of multiple-species 1km×1km resolution hourly basis emissions inventory for Japan

TL;DR: In this article, a new atmospheric emissions inventory, called "EAGrid2000-Japan" was developed to provide reliable fundamental data for studies of the long-range transport of air pollution in the East Asia region, specifically targeting Japan, in the year 2000.

Successes in African agriculture: Results of an expert survey

TL;DR: Using primary data from a survey of expert opinion, this paper identified key successes emerging in African agriculture and identified key ingredients that appear necessary for building on these individual cases and expanding them into broad-based agricultural growth.

Cellular damage induced by cadmium and mercury in Medicago sativa

TL;DR: Both Cd and Hg not only compromised severely the cellular redox homeostasis, but also caused cell necrosis, indicating that the depletion of the GSH/hGSH pool was not sufficient to promote cell death, and that other phytotoxic mechanisms might be involved.

Remote sensing of surface energy fluxes at 101‐m pixel resolutions

TL;DR: The DisALEXI approach as mentioned in this paper combines low and high-resolution remote sensing data to estimate surface energy fluxes, particularly evapotranspiration (ET), at spatial resolutions of the order of 101 m.

Methane oxidation in the soil surface layer of a flooded rice field and the effect of ammonium

TL;DR: In this paper, the CH4 flux from intact soil cores of a flooded rice field in Italy was measured under aerobic and anaerobic incubation conditions, and the difference between the anaerobescale and aerobic fluxes was apparently due to CH4 oxidation in the oxic soil surface layer.
Journal ArticleDOI

Microbial performance in soils along a salinity gradient under acidic conditions

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied how a gradient in salinity under low pH conditions affected activity, community structure, and biomass of soil microorganisms, and found that the strongest decrease with salinity was shown by ATP and ergosterol, achieving only 12 and 4% of the site 1 values, respectively.
