TLDR
In this paper, the authors focus on the role of agriculture and fishing in the European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and show that agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure.
Abstract
Agriculture and fishing are the primary source of almost all our food, as well as of many other products, so remain vital activities even though their share in the economy is small and in continuous decline. Partly for this reason public policy in these areas is almost entirely integrated at European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Forestry policies are also heavily affected by EU-level decision-making. As agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure, it is agriculture that will receive the greatest attention here.

Atmospheric discharge and dispersion of radionuclides during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Part II : Verification of the source term and analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion

TL;DR: The analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion and deposition suggests that the present distribution of a large amount of (137)Cs deposition in eastern Japan was produced primarily by four events that occurred on March 12, 15-16, 20, and 21-23.

Phosphorus flows and balances of the European Union Member States.

TL;DR: Although wide-ranging variation between countries, generally phosphorus use in EU-27 was characterized by relatively large dependency on (primary) imports, long-term accumulation in agricultural soils, especially in west European countries, providing ample opportunities for improvement.

Rights-based fisheries governance: from fishing rights to human rights

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that more secure, less vulnerable fishers make more effective and motivated fishery managers in the context of participatory or rights-based fisheries governance, and further suggest that insecurity among fishers living in poverty can be most effectively addressed by social and political development that invokes the existing legal framework supporting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

A high incidence of species substitution and mislabelling detected in meat products sold in South Africa

TL;DR: Overall, this study confirmed that the mislabelling of processed meats is commonplace in South Africa and not only violates food labelling regulations, but also poses economic, religious, ethical and health impacts.

Development of multiple-species 1km×1km resolution hourly basis emissions inventory for Japan

TL;DR: In this article, a new atmospheric emissions inventory, called "EAGrid2000-Japan" was developed to provide reliable fundamental data for studies of the long-range transport of air pollution in the East Asia region, specifically targeting Japan, in the year 2000.

Short-Season Soybean Yield Compensation in Response to Population and Water Regime

TL;DR: High populations ensured early canopy coverage and maximized light interception, CGR, and crop biomass, resulting in increased seed number and yield potential, and reduced yield caused by low population density were due to low seed number.

Reconciling indigenous knowledge with scientific assessment of soil fertility changes in southwestern Burkina Faso

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss local soil knowledge in one small village in southwestern Burkina Faso and relate scientific measures of soil fertility to farmers' perceptions of soil types and changing soil fertility.

The impact of land conversion on plant biodiversity in the forest zone of Cameroon

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of landconversion on above-ground plant biodiversity was assessed in different land use systems (primary and secondary forest, fallows of different ages, cocoa plantations, and crop fields) within the forest zone of Cameroon, and the results indicated the relatively great importance of secondary forests as refuge areas for primary forest plant species.

A GIS site-selection process for habitat creation: estimating connectivity of habitat patches

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a method that addresses the problem of site selection for habitat creation involving spatial processes on the landscape scale and interprets landscape ecological principles with focus on population dynamics to specific information required to support a particular decision at each stage of the process.
Journal ArticleDOI

Tracking Expenditures of the Elusive Nature Tourists of Southeastern Arizona

TL;DR: The authors found that bird-watchers spend more money than other visitors to natural sites and that communities that target nature visitors from areas more than a few hours' drive away and encourage visits to multiple sites can increase visitor expenditures.
