TLDR
In this paper, the authors focus on the role of agriculture and fishing in the European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and show that agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure.
Abstract
Agriculture and fishing are the primary source of almost all our food, as well as of many other products, so remain vital activities even though their share in the economy is small and in continuous decline. Partly for this reason public policy in these areas is almost entirely integrated at European level in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Forestry policies are also heavily affected by EU-level decision-making. As agriculture dominates in terms of direct contribution to GDP and numbers of people engaged in it, as well as accounting for the largest amount of public support expenditure, it is agriculture that will receive the greatest attention here.

Atmospheric discharge and dispersion of radionuclides during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Part II : Verification of the source term and analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion

TL;DR: The analysis of regional-scale atmospheric dispersion and deposition suggests that the present distribution of a large amount of (137)Cs deposition in eastern Japan was produced primarily by four events that occurred on March 12, 15-16, 20, and 21-23.

Phosphorus flows and balances of the European Union Member States.

TL;DR: Although wide-ranging variation between countries, generally phosphorus use in EU-27 was characterized by relatively large dependency on (primary) imports, long-term accumulation in agricultural soils, especially in west European countries, providing ample opportunities for improvement.

Rights-based fisheries governance: from fishing rights to human rights

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that more secure, less vulnerable fishers make more effective and motivated fishery managers in the context of participatory or rights-based fisheries governance, and further suggest that insecurity among fishers living in poverty can be most effectively addressed by social and political development that invokes the existing legal framework supporting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

A high incidence of species substitution and mislabelling detected in meat products sold in South Africa

TL;DR: Overall, this study confirmed that the mislabelling of processed meats is commonplace in South Africa and not only violates food labelling regulations, but also poses economic, religious, ethical and health impacts.

Development of multiple-species 1km×1km resolution hourly basis emissions inventory for Japan

TL;DR: In this article, a new atmospheric emissions inventory, called "EAGrid2000-Japan" was developed to provide reliable fundamental data for studies of the long-range transport of air pollution in the East Asia region, specifically targeting Japan, in the year 2000.

Influence of environmental enrichment on the behaviour, performance and meat quality of domestic pigs

TL;DR: Behavioural observations showed that environmental enrichment reduced time spent inactive and time spent involved in harmful social and aggressive behaviour while increasing the time spent in exploratory behaviour.

Water deficit effects on solute contribution to osmotic adjustment as a function of leaf ageing in three durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) cultivars performing differently in arid conditions.

TL;DR: The capacity of OA was greater in growing than in expanded leaves, especially in the two cultivars best adapted to aridity, and allowed turgor maintenance in these genotypes and in young expanded and growing leaves harvested at the end of the stress treatment.

Role of iron in controlling speciation and mobilization of arsenic in subsurface environment

TL;DR: It has been demonstrated that above red-ox reactions involving iron and arsenic are also possible through predominantly abiotic pathways, and it is entirely possible that abiotic interactions as described here may be responsible for a substantial amount of transformations involving Iron and arsenic in anoxic subsurface environments.

Land Cover Changes Between 1958 and 1986 in Kalu District, Southern Wello, Ethiopia

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated changes in land use/land cover (hereafter land cover) in a specific area in Kalu District, Southern Wello, Ethiopia, by comparing two aerial photographs from 1958 and 1986.
