TLDR
The biosphere is a complex adaptive system whose study cannot be arbitrarily reduced to any single spatial- and/or temporal-scale level of resolution without a loss of content, so a spatially-integrated study of biodiversity dynamics at an evolutionary timescale is needed.

Cycles in fossil diversity

TL;DR: Rohde et al. as discussed by the authors used the International Commission on Stratigraphy's 2004 time scale to translate the stratigraphic records into a record of diversity vs. time, with details given in the supplement.

Diversity-Dependence, Ecological Speciation, and the Role of Competition in Macroevolution

TL;DR: An emerging body of research suggests that diversity-dependence contributes to the formation and persistence of incipient species and raises new questions about the meaning of ecological speciation.

Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction from Faunal Remains: Ecological Basics and Analytical Assumptions

TL;DR: Greater knowledge of ecological processes as well as increased analytical sophistication in paleozoology is providing increasingly rigorous and detailed insights to paleoenvironments.

The Unified Neutral Theory of Biodiversity and Biogeography

TL;DR: A study of the issue indicates that it is not a serious problem for neutral theory, and there is sometimes a difference between some of the simulation-based results of Hubbell and the analytical results of Volkov et al. (2003).

Species Diversity in Space and Time

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a hierarchical dynamic puzzle to understand the relationship between habitat diversity and species diversity and the evolution of the relationships between habitats diversity and diversity in evolutionary time.

Phylogenies and Community Ecology

TL;DR: A common pattern of phylogenetic conservatism in ecological character is recognized and the challenges of using phylogenies of partial lineages are highlighted and phylogenetic approaches to three emergent properties of communities: species diversity, relative abundance distributions, and range sizes are reviewed.

New multidimensional functional diversity indices for a multifaceted framework in functional ecology.

TL;DR: This study suggests that decomposition of functional diversity into its three primary components provides a meaningful framework for its quantification and for the classification of existing functional diversity indices.
