TLDR
Beyond helping to understand disease biology, clinical epigenetics is being incorporated into patient management in oncology, as well as being explored for clinical applicability for other human pathologies such as neurological and infectious diseases and immune system disorders.
Abstract
Biomarker discovery and validation are necessary for improving the prediction of clinical outcomes and patient monitoring. Despite considerable interest in biomarker discovery and development, improvements in the range and quality of biomarkers are still needed. The main challenge is how to integrate preclinical data to obtain a reliable biomarker that can be measured with acceptable costs in routine clinical practice. Epigenetic alterations are already being incorporated as valuable candidates in the biomarker field. Furthermore, their reversible nature offers a promising opportunity to ameliorate disease symptoms by using epigenetic-based therapy. Thus, beyond helping to understand disease biology, clinical epigenetics is being incorporated into patient management in oncology, as well as being explored for clinical applicability for other human pathologies such as neurological and infectious diseases and immune system disorders.

Valproic acid enhances neuronal differentiation of sympathoadrenal progenitor cells

TL;DR: Similar to neural stem cells, VPA launches differentiation mechanisms in sympathoadrenal progenitor cells that result in increased generation of functional neurons that are relevant to the potential use of chromaffin progenitors in transplantation therapies of neurodegenerative diseases.

Effects of Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors on Modulating H3K4 Methylation Marks - A Novel Cross-Talk Mechanism between Histone-Modifying Enzymes.

TL;DR: Evidence suggests that the crosstalk between histone deacetylation and histone H3K4 methylation is attributable to the ability of these HDAC inhibitors to repress the JARID1 family of hist one H3 lysine 4 demethylases (H3K 4DMs), including RBP2, PLU-1, SMCX, and LSD1, through the downregulation of Sp1 expression.

Interleukin-2 receptor-α proximal promoter hypomethylation is associated with multiple sclerosis

TL;DR: The data suggest that differential methylation of the IL2RA promoter in T cells could be an important pathogenic mechanism in MS, and DNA methylation differences specific to particular leukocyte subtypes in MS cases compared with controls are inferred by deconvolution of the array data.

Gene promoter methylation and expression of Pin1 differ between patients with frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

TL;DR: DNA methylation at Pin1 gene promoter and its expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of FTD patients is investigated to suggest an important and distinct involvement of Pin1 in these two types of dementia.

DNA methylation at the 9p21 glaucoma susceptibility locus is associated with normal-tension glaucoma.

TL;DR: An association of methylation status in the CDKN2B promoter with NTG, particularly in females, suggests that the observed genetic association with the disease at this locus could be in part due to epigenetic mechanisms, and is likely to be independent of the association of nonsynonymous coding variation within the gene.
