TLDR
A review of the current literature on EVs, the electric grid, and renewable energy integration is presented in this paper, where the economic, environmental and grid impacts of EVs are reviewed.
Abstract
Electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy sources offer the potential to substantially decrease carbon emissions from both the transportation and power generation sectors of the economy. Mass adoption of EVs will have a number of impacts and benefits, including the ability to assist in the integration of renewable energy into existing electric grids. This paper reviews the current literature on EVs, the electric grid, and renewable energy integration. Key methods and assumptions of the literature are discussed. The economic, environmental and grid impacts of EVs are reviewed. Numerous studies assessing the ability of EVs to integrate renewable energy sources are assessed; the literature indicates that EVs can significantly reduce the amount of excess renewable energy produced in an electric system. Studies on wind–EV interaction are much more detailed than those on solar photovoltaics (PV) and EVs. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research.

Prioritizing the Chicken or Egg? Electric Vehicle Purchase and Charging Infrastructure Subsidies in Germany

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of an increasing share of EVs on the electricity grid and suitable locations for charging stations with examples from a Case Study in Lower Bavaria is discussed, where the authors analyze the effect of purchase subsidies on EV purchases in Germany, a high-income country characterized by an important automotive industry.

Assessment of the Marginal Emission Factor associated with Electric Vehicle Charging

TL;DR: In this paper, an extension of existing lean approaches taken from the literature in order to account for cross-border flows is proposed, which shows that even countries with an almost carbon-free generation mix, like Switzerland, may sustain very high marginal emission factors.

Integration of renewable energy into the transport and electricity sectors through V2G

TL;DR: In this paper, two national energy systems are modelled, one for Denmark, including combined heat and power (CHP) and the other a similarly sized country without CHP (the latter being more typical of other industrialized countries).

A conceptual framework for the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) implementation

TL;DR: A proposed framework to effectively integrate the aggregated battery vehicles into the grid as distributed energy resources to act as controllable loads to levelize the demand on the system during off-peak conditions and as a generation/storage device during the day to provide capacity and energy services to the grid.
