Human Capital and Energy Efficiency: Evidence from Developing Countries

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the effect of human capital on energy efficiency in a panel of developing countries from 1990 to 2017 using the stochastic frontier model and the energy demand function.

14 Collapse and Sustainability: Rome, the Maya, and the Modern World

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors develop and illustrate a theory for understanding sustainability and collapse that has cross-cultural applicability, and illustrate the theory by the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and reveal new insights into what it means to be a sustainable society.
Journal ArticleDOI

The energy efficiency rebound effect in general equilibrium

TL;DR: The authors developed a stylized general equilibrium model to estimate changes in economy-wide energy consumption following an exogenous costless improvement in energy efficiency, which determines how behavioral changes offset energy efficiency improvements.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Framework for Reducing Global Manufacturing Emissions

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an original framework to account for greenhouse gas emissions from outsourcing, and recommend a carbon tax, which is based on the idea of outsourcing as a cause of increase in global emissions.

Designing Policies to Make Cars Greener: A Review of the Literature

TL;DR: This article reviewed what is known about the economic efficiency of fuel taxes relative to efficiency standards aimed at mitigating environmental externalities from automobiles and presented a simplified model of car choice that allows us to emphasize the relationships between fuel economy, other car attributes, and miles traveled.

Economics and consumer behavior

TL;DR: Deaton and Muellbauer as mentioned in this paper introduced generations of students to the economic theory of consumer behaviour and used it in applied econometrics, including consumer index numbers, household characteristics, demand, and household welfare comparisons.
Journal ArticleDOI

Technology, Prices, and the Derived Demand for Energy

TL;DR: In this article, an industrial demand for energy is essentially a derived demand: the firm's demand for the energy is an input, derived from demand for a firm's output, which is an output.

Individual Discount Rates and the Purchase and Utilization of Energy-Using Durables

TL;DR: In this article, a model of individual behavior in the purchase and utilization of energy-using durables is presented, where the tradeoff between capital costs for more energy efficient appliances and operating costs for the appliances is emphasized.
Journal ArticleDOI

Economic Implications of Mandated Efficiency in Standards for Household Appliances

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that the indiscriminate use of mandated standards will backfire, but a mix of selective standards and reliance on prices as a restraint can be effective.

Qualitative Choice Analysis: Theory, Econometrics, and an Application to Automobile Demand

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a detailed study of automobile demand and use, presenting forecasts based on the powerful new techniques of qualitative choice analysis and standard regression techniques, which are combined to analyze situations that neither alone can accurately forecast.
