Non-adherence to Thromboprophylaxis Guidelines in Atrial Fibrillation: A Narrative Review of the Extent of and Factors in Guideline Non-adherence.
Eyob Alemayehu Gebreyohannes,Sandra Salter,Leanne Chalmers,Luke Bereznicki,Kenneth Lee,Kenneth Lee +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on non-adherence to contemporary guidelines and the factors associated with guideline nonadherence, including physician-related and patient-related factors (such as patient refusals, bleeding risk, older age, and recurrent falls).
Journal ArticleDOI
Atrial fibrillation in patients with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis: Magnitude of the problem and new approach to oral anticoagulation.
Oliver Königsbrügge,Cihan Ay +1 more
TL;DR: There is no evidence to support efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants compared to vitamin K antagonists in HD patients, and the pharmacological characteristics of DOACs are of particular interest in the HD setting.
Journal ArticleDOI
Direct oral anticoagulants versus standard triple therapy in atrial fibrillation and PCI: meta-analysis
Natale Daniele Brunetti,Nicola Tarantino,Luisa De Gennaro,Michele Correale,Francesco Santoro,Matteo Di Biase +5 more
TL;DR: DOACs are safer than and as effective as warfarin when used in patients with AF undergoing PCI; dual therapy with DOACs is comparable to triple therapy in terms of safety and efficacy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Wide-Band Dielectric Imaging and the Novel Cryoballoon-Occlusion Tool to Guide Cryoballoon-Based Pulmonary Vein Isolation.

Journal ArticleDOI
Demonstration of the potential of white-box machine learning approaches to gain insights from cardiovascular disease electrocardiograms
TL;DR: It can be shown that a white-box machine learning approach can reveal granular structures, thus confirming known linear relationships and also revealing nonlinear relationships, which could be applied in medicine in the future.

TL;DR: In this article, a randomized controlled trial of Aliskiren in the Prevention of Major Cardiovascular Events in Elderly people was presented. But the authors did not discuss the effect of the combination therapy in patients living with systolic hypertension.

Classification of subtype of acute ischemic stroke. Definitions for use in a multicenter clinical trial. TOAST. Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment
Harold P. Adams,Birgitte H. Bendixen,L J Kappelle,José Biller,Betsy B. Love,David Lee Gordon,E. Eugene Marsh +6 more
TL;DR: The TOAST stroke subtype classification system is easy to use and has good interobserver agreement and should allow investigators to report responses to treatment among important subgroups of patients with ischemic stroke.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dabigatran versus warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation
Stuart J. Connolly,Michael D. Ezekowitz,John W. Eikelboom,Jonas Oldgren,Amit Parekh,Janice Pogue,Paul A. Reilly,Ellison Themeles,Jeanne Varrone,Susan Wang,Marco Alings,Denis Xavier,Jun Zhu,Rafael Diaz,Basil S. Lewis,Harald Darius,Hans-Christoph Diener,Campbell D. Joyner,Lars Wallentin +18 more
TL;DR: In patients with atrial fibrillation, dabigatran given at a dose of 110 mg was associated with rates of stroke and systemic embolism that were similar to those associated with warfarin, as well as lower rates of major hemorrhage.

Spontaneous Initiation of Atrial Fibrillation by Ectopic Beats Originating in the Pulmonary Veins
Michel Haïssaguerre,Pierre Jaïs,D. C. Shah,Atsushi Takahashi,Mélèze Hocini,G Quiniou,S. Garrigue,A Le Mouroux,P Le Métayer,Jacques Clementy +9 more
TL;DR: The pulmonary veins are an important source of ectopic beats, initiating frequent paroxysms of atrial fibrillation and these foci respond to treatment with radio-frequency ablation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Apixaban versus Warfarin in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation
Christopher B. Granger,John H. Alexander,Renato D. Lopes,Elaine M. Hylek,Michael G. Hanna,Hussein R. Al-Khalidi,Jack Ansell,Dan Atar,Alvaro Avezum,M. Cecilia Bahit,Rafael Diaz,J. Horowitz,Puneet Mohan,Petr Jansky,Basil S. Lewis,Jose Lopez-Sendon,Prem Pais,Alexander Parkhomenko,Jun Zhu,Lars Wallentin +29 more
TL;DR: In patients with atrial fibrillation, apixaban was superior to warfarin in preventing stroke or systemic embolism, caused less bleeding, and resulted in lower mortality.
