Journal ArticleDOI

Refining Stroke and Bleeding Prediction in Atrial Fibrillation by Adding Consecutive Biomarkers to Clinical Risk Scores.

TL;DR: By adding consecutive biomarkers, the predictive performance of CHA2DS2-VASc for ischemic stroke was not increased, whereas the predictive ability of HAS-BLED for major bleeding was only slightly enhanced, and the net benefit and clinical usefulness of the biomarker-based models were marginal in comparison to the original scores based on clinical factors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular mechanisms of atrial fibrosis: implications for the clinic

TL;DR: This review is focused on detailing the key molecular signalling pathways that contribute to atrial fibrosis including: angiotensin II, transforming growth factor, TGF- ß1, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) and endothelin-1.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oral Anticoagulation in Asian Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and a History of Intracranial Hemorrhage

TL;DR: NOAC might be a more effective and safer treatment option for Asian patients with nonvalvular AF and a prior history of ICH, and was associated with a significant lower risk of I CH and ischemic stroke compared with warfarin.

2013 ESH/ESC Guidelines for the management of arterial hypertension: The Task Force for the management of arterial hypertension of the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) and of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

Giuseppe Mancia, +89 more
TL;DR: In this article, a randomized controlled trial of Aliskiren in the Prevention of Major Cardiovascular Events in Elderly people was presented. But the authors did not discuss the effect of the combination therapy in patients living with systolic hypertension.
Journal ArticleDOI

Classification of subtype of acute ischemic stroke. Definitions for use in a multicenter clinical trial. TOAST. Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment

TL;DR: The TOAST stroke subtype classification system is easy to use and has good interobserver agreement and should allow investigators to report responses to treatment among important subgroups of patients with ischemic stroke.
Journal ArticleDOI

Spontaneous Initiation of Atrial Fibrillation by Ectopic Beats Originating in the Pulmonary Veins

TL;DR: The pulmonary veins are an important source of ectopic beats, initiating frequent paroxysms of atrial fibrillation and these foci respond to treatment with radio-frequency ablation.
