A Study on Alternative Backfill Material for Pre-insulated Pipe through the Laboratory Tests

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the performance of the pre-insulated pipe backfilled with the standard medium-grained sand with two types of backfill material, natural sand and coarse grained sand.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Simplified Approach to Estimating the Collapsible Behavior of Loess

TL;DR: In this article, the modulus reduction method was proposed to estimate the collapsible behavior of loess upon wetting, and a case history concerning a published field test was studied, and the result showed that the simulated deformation characteristics by adopting the method agree excellently well with the measured data.
Journal ArticleDOI

Upper-bound approach for analysis of cantilever retaining walls

TL;DR: In this article, a method for the analysis of cantilever retaining walls is proposed based on ultimate limit states, but in contrast to other methods, which are recognized worldwide, also considers the condition of the cantilevers.
Journal ArticleDOI

3-dimension stresses and new failure model to predict behavior of clay soils in various liquid limit ranges

TL;DR: In this article, over 3000 data from the laboratory studies and literature for the field soils were analyzed to quantify the relationship between the density, natural moisture content, shear strength, deviatoric shear stress at failure with the liquid limit.

Damage Assessment and Strengthening of R/C Building Constructed on Expansive Soils

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an experience in assessment and strengthening of a R/C building carried out in Sudan during the last year, which revealed the need of five different strengthening and retrofitting techniques; there are, transformation of foundation system from isolated footings to strap foundation to increase the stiffness and rigidity of footings, concrete jacketing of basement floor columns, metal jacketing, construction of shear walls to enhance the stability of the building and finally CFRP laminates for strengthening the basement floor cover slab.
