TLDR
All of the GTP isolated by ion-exchange chromatography from extracts of rat and human erythrocytes was found to be a 1:1 complex with ferric iron, suggesting these iron nucleotides may participate in iron transport and hemoglobin synthesis.

The molecular mechanisms of the metabolism and transport of iron in normal and neoplastic cells.

TL;DR: Iron uptake by mammalian cells is mediated by the binding of serum Tf to the TfR, and recent work has suggested that the short-lived messenger molecule, NO, can affect cellular Fe metabolism via its interaction with IRP1.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ferritin and superoxide-dependent lipid peroxidation.

TL;DR: Data suggest that ferritin may function in vivo as a source of iron for promotion of superoxide-dependent lipid peroxidation, and that initiation is not via an iron-catalyzed Haber-Weiss reaction.

Low molecular weight intracellular iron transport compounds.

TL;DR: Evidence is presented for the existence of an intracellular pool of low molecular weight iron compounds which acts as an intermediate between extracellular iron and a wide variety of intrace cellular processes.

Lipid peroxidation and mechanisms of toxicity.

TL;DR: The possibility exists that certain foreign compounds may interfere with or even overwhelm these defenses, and herein could lie a general mechanism of toxicity.

Superoxide dependent iron release from ferritin in inflammatory diseases

TL;DR: Evidence is presented that oxygen free radicals are involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and superoxide is able to release iron from ferritin, providing a suitable source of iron, for the formation of hydroxyl radicals.

Phosphorus compounds in the human erythrocyte.

TL;DR: A procedure using column chromatography on Dowex 1 formate with gradient elution by ammonium formate buffer is recommended for the isolation of the water-soluble phosphate compounds of the human erythrocyte and the ERYthrocytes exposed to this incubation in vivo showed the same relative specific activities of their phosphate groups as did humans incubasted in vitro.

Studies on the compounds of ATP and iron, isolated from human erythrocytes.

TL;DR: Compounds of ATP and iron, isolated from human and bovine erythrocytes were investigated by chromatography and indicated, that the chief compound corresponded to the formula of Fe(ATP)2.

Determination of Iron in the Acid-Soluble Fraction of Human Erythrocytes

TL;DR: In extracts of the acid-soluble fraction of human erythrocytes, iron exists in form of complexes with nucleotides, and during separation on Dowex-I columns it was completely eluted in that form.

Iron-atp, a by-product of acid extraction of whole blood or red blood cells

TL;DR: It appears that iron-ATP in quantities found in acid-extracted blood is the result of iron release from hemoglobin and the subsequent complexing of such iron with available ATP.
