NASA's Black Marble Nighttime Lights Product Suite

TLDR
The Black Marble nighttime lights product suite (VNP46) is available at 500m resolution since January 2012 with data from the VISible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Platform (SNPP) as discussed by the authors, which utilizes all high-quality, cloud-free, atmospheric-, terrain-, vegetation-, snow-, lunar-, and stray light-corrected radiances to estimate daily nighttime lights (NTL) and other intrinsic surface optical properties.

Understanding an urbanizing planet: Strategic directions for remote sensing

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify four strategic directions for future urban remote sensing research: high temporal frequency analysis, characterization of urban heterogeneity, characterisation of urban form and structure in two and three dimensions, and linking remote sensing with emerging urban data.
Journal ArticleDOI

An extended time series (2000–2018) of global NPP-VIIRS-like nighttime light data from a cross-sensor calibration

TL;DR: Chen et al. as discussed by the authors built an extended time series (2000-2018) of NPP-VIIRS-like NTL data through a new cross-sensor calibration from DMSP-OLS-NTL data (2000, 2004, 2006, and 2010).

A harmonized global nighttime light dataset 1992-2018.

TL;DR: The generated global DMSP NTL time-series data (1992–2018) show consistent temporal trends and provides valuable support for various studies related to human activities such as electricity consumption and urban extent dynamics.
Journal ArticleDOI

A global record of annual urban dynamics (1992-2013) from nighttime lights

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a new approach to develop spatially and temporally consistent global urban maps from 1992 to 2013, using the DMSP/OLS NTL observations.

Urban green space, public health, and environmental justice: The challenge of making cities ‘just green enough’

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed the Anglo-American literature on urban green space, especially parks, and compared efforts to green US and Chinese cities and found that the distribution of such space often disproportionately benefits predominantly white and more affluent communities.

Policy: Sustainable development goals for people and planet.

TL;DR: Griggs and colleagues as mentioned in this paper argue that planetary stability must be integrated with United Nations targets to fight poverty and secure human well-being, argue David Griggs and colleagues, and

Geometrical considerations and nomenclature for reflectance

TL;DR: This monograph presents a unified approach to the specification of reflectance in relation to the beam geometry of both the incident and the reflected flux in any reflectometer or in any application of measured reflectance data.
