TLDR
This article proposed the risk-as-feelings hypothesis, which highlights the role of affect experienced at the moment of decision making, and showed that emotional reactions to risky situations often diverge from cognitive assessments of those risks.
Abstract
Virtually all current theories of choice under risk or uncertainty are cognitive and consequentialist. They assume that people assess the desirability and likelihood of possible outcomes of choice alternatives and integrate this information through some type of expectation-based calculus to arrive at a decision. The authors propose an alternative theoretical perspective, the risk-as-feelings hypothesis, that highlights the role of affect experienced at the moment of decision making. Drawing on research from clinical, physiological, and other subfields of psychology, they show that emotional reactions to risky situations often diverge from cognitive assessments of those risks. When such divergence occurs, emotional reactions often drive behavior. The risk-as-feelings hypothesis is shown to explain a wide range of phenomena that have resisted interpretation in cognitive-consequentialist terms.

Public acceptance of the expansion and modification of high-voltage power lines in the context of the energy transition

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated whether the perception of HVPLs changes when they are seen as a necessary measure for the successful energy transition, and they found that highvoltage power lines are associated with more positive feelings, higher perceived benefit, lower perceived risk, and higher general and local acceptance when they were linked to the energy transition.

Peer Influences on Adolescent Risk Behavior

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a theory that highlights an adolescent gap in the developmental timing of neurobehavioral systems underpinning incentive processing and cognitive control, showing that exposure to peer-related stimuli sensitizes the reward system to the reward value of risky behavior.

Risk Perceptions and Psychological Effects During the Italian COVID-19 Emergency

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provided data about the immediate risk perceptions and psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic among Italian participants and found that although levels of general concern are relatively high among Italians, risk perceptions are highest with regards to the institutional economy and work, and lowest concerning health.

Priming the Risk Attitudes of Professionals in Financial Decision Making

TL;DR: This paper explored the influence of priming on financial decisions by reinforcing subjects' risk-seeking behavior under uncertainty and comparing it to behavior in control groups, finding that professionals' decisions were affected more than undergraduates' suggesting they employ a more intuitive and less analytic approach in making their decisions.

Prospect theory: an analysis of decision under risk

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a critique of expected utility theory as a descriptive model of decision making under risk, and develop an alternative model, called prospect theory, in which value is assigned to gains and losses rather than to final assets and in which probabilities are replaced by decision weights.

Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain

TL;DR: The authors argued that rational decisions are not the product of logic alone - they require the support of emotion and feeling, drawing on his experience with neurological patients affected with brain damage, Dr Damasio showed how absence of emotions and feelings can break down rationality.
