TLDR
The establishment of a vascular supply is required for organ development and differentiation as well as for tissue repair and reproductive functions in the adult.
Abstract
The establishment of a vascular supply is required for organ development and differentiation as well as for tissue repair and reproductive functions in the adult1 Neovascularization (angiogenesis) is also implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of disorders These include: proliferative retinopathies, age-related macular degeneration, tumors, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis1,2 A strong correlation has been noted between density of microvessels in primary breast cancers and their nodal metastases and patient survival3 Similarly, a correlation has been reported between vascularity and invasive behavior in several other tumors4–6

Structure, Function, and Regulation of the Corpus Luteum

TL;DR: This chapter will focus on luteotropic and luteolytic factors that regulate the structure and function of the corpus luteum during the ovarian cycle, and in some species extend the luteal lifespan if pregnancy occurs.

Identification and characterization of a new splicing variant of vascular endothelial growth factor: VEGF183.

TL;DR: The discovery of a new splicing variant of vascular endothelial growth factor named VEGF183 is reported, six amino acids shorter than its closest relative, V EGF189, due to the utilization of a conserved alternate splicing donor site within exon 6a.

Mersalyl Is a Novel Inducer of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Gene Expression and Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 Activity

TL;DR: The results indicate that mersalyl induces expression of HIF-1 and a subset ofhypoxia-inducible genes by a mechanism, involving the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor and mitogen-activated protein kinase activity, that is distinct from mechanisms of induction by hypoxia, CoCl2, or DFO.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of VEGF and FGF-2 on proliferation and differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells

TL;DR: It is suggested that VEGF has positive effects on odonto-/osteogenic differentiation in vitro and on the formation of mineralized structure in vivo and exogenous FGF-2 might inhibit terminal differentiation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Vascular endothelial growth factor and microvascular density in esophageal and gastric carcinomas.

TL;DR: The expression of V EGF is correlated with tumor angiogenesis, and VEGF plays an important role in new blood vessels formation, the expression of S-P immunohistochemical staining shows, and MVD and VegF play an important roles in tumor growth and metastasis.

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 is a basic-helix-loop-helix-PAS heterodimer regulated by cellular O2 tension

TL;DR: Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is found in mammalian cells cultured under reduced O2 tension and is necessary for transcriptional activation mediated by the erythropoietin gene enhancer in hypoxic cells.

Tumor angiogenesis and metastasis--correlation in invasive breast carcinoma.

TL;DR: The number of microvessels per 200x field in the areas of most intensive neovascularization in an invasive breast carcinoma may be an independent predictor of metastatic disease either in axillary lymph nodes or at distant sites (or both).
Journal ArticleDOI

Vascular endothelial growth factor is a secreted angiogenic mitogen

TL;DR: DNA sequencing suggests the existence of several molecular species of VEGF, a heparin-binding growth factor specific for vascular endothelial cells that is able to induce angiogenesis in vivo.

What is the evidence that tumors are angiogenesis dependent

TL;DR: Method of treating a wound or burn which comprises directly dressing its surface with non-woven fabric comprising staple fibers of spun, regenerated collagen substantially free of telopeptides is disclosed.
