Journal ArticleDOI

Long-distance dispersal vs vicariance: the origin and genetic diversity of alpine plants in the Spanish Sierra Nevada.

TL;DR: Sierra Nevada populations of all species investigated here preserve unexpectedly high genetic diversity, which testifies to the important influence of long-term isolation, i.e. vicariance, on genetic diversity through fostering the accumulation of new mutations and/or the fixation of ancestral ones.
Journal ArticleDOI

Founder events and variation at microsatellite loci in an insular passerine bird, the Laysan finch (Telespiza cantans)

TL;DR: It is concluded that the PHR population is not adequate as a secondary genetic reserve for T. cantans, and an alternative refuge needs to be established.
Journal ArticleDOI

Local adaptation maintains clinal variation in melanin-based coloration of European barn owls (Tyto alba).

TL;DR: This work investigated whether selection accounts for the strong clinal variation observed in a highly heritable pheomelanin‐based color trait in the European barn owl by comparing spatial differentiation of color and of neutral genes among populations, which suggests that substantial gene flow occurs among populations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genetic drift and within-host metapopulation dynamics of HIV-1 infection

TL;DR: A simple “metapopulation” model of HIV replication is presented, where the population of infected cells is comprised of a large number of small populations, each of which is established by a few founder viruses and undergoes turnover.

Coefficients of Inbreeding and Relationship

TL;DR: The importance of having a coefficient by means of which the degree of inbreeding may be expressed has been brought out by Pearl' in a number of papers published between 1913 and 1917.
Book

The material basis of evolution.

TL;DR: Goldschmidt as discussed by the authors argued that macroevolution resulted from larger jumps in genotype across "bridgeless gaps" related either to systemic mutations or to mutations affecting early development.
