TL;DR: Analysis of the oldest genomes suggests that there was an early split within Beringian populations, giving rise to the Northern and Southern lineages, and that the early population spread widely and rapidly suggests that their access to large portions of the hemisphere was essentially unrestricted, yet there are genomic and archaeological hints of an earlier human presence.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: It is found that two human skulls from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, part of one of the indigenous groups known as 'Botocudos', find that their genomic ancestry is Polynesian, with no detectable Native American component.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of Polynesian mtDNA haplogroups in remains of Botocudo Amerindians from Brazil
Vanessa F. Gonçalves,Jesper Stenderup,Claudia Rodrigues-Carvalho,Hilton P. Silva,Higgor Gonçalves-Dornelas,Andersen Liryo,Toomas Kivisild,Anna-Sapfo Malaspinas,Paula F. Campos,Paula F. Campos,Morten Arendt Rasmussen,Eske Willerslev,Sérgio Danilo Junho Pena +12 more
TL;DR: The identification of mitochondrial sequences belonging to haplogroups characteristic of Polynesians in DNA extracted from ancient skulls of the now extinct Botocudo Indians from Brazil confirmed in independent replications in Brazil and Denmark, ensuring reliability of the data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Isotopic study of geographic origins and diet of enslaved Africans buried in two Brazilian cemeteries
Murilo Q.R. Bastos,Murilo Q.R. Bastos,Ricardo Ventura Santos,Ricardo Ventura Santos,Sheila Mendonça de Souza,Claudia Rodrigues-Carvalho,Robert H. Tykot,Della Collins Cook,Roberto Ventura Santos +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, isotopes of carbon, nitrogen and strontium in the enamel and dentin of teeth derived from remains of 41 enslaved Africans excavated in Pretos Novos cemetery (Rio de Janeiro) and Se de Salvador cathedral (Salvador) in order to investigate aspects related to the geographical origins and dietary habits in Africa in these two groups with differing histories.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human mobility on the Brazilian coast: an analysis of strontium isotopes in archaeological human remains from Forte Marechal Luz Sambaqui
Murilo Q.R. Bastos,Sheila Mendonça de Souza,Roberto Ventura Santos,Barbara A.F. Lima,Ricardo Ventura Santos,Claudia Rodrigues-Carvalho +5 more
TL;DR: The results indicate the existence of three non-local individuals, buried in both the level without pottery and the layer with pottery, possibly originated from the Santa Catarina Plateau, close to the municipality of Lages, or from the Curitiba Plateau.
