The Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey. I. Science goals, survey design, and strategy
Riccardo Giovanelli,Martha P. Haynes,Brian R. Kent,Philip Perillat,Amelie Saintonge,Noah Brosch,Barbara Catinella,G. Lyle Hoffman,Sabrina Stierwalt,Kristine Spekkens,M. S. Lerner,Karen L. Masters,Emmanuel Momjian,Jessica L. Rosenberg,C. M. Springob,Alessandro Boselli,Vassilis Charmandaris,Jeremy Darling,Jonathan Ivor Davies,Diego G. Lambas,Giuseppe Gavazzi,Carlo Giovanardi,Eduardo Hardy,Leslie K. Hunt,A. Iovino,Igor D. Karachentsev,Valentina E. Karachentseva,Rebecca A. Koopmann,Christian Marinoni,Robert F. Minchin,Erik Muller,Mary E. Putman,C. Pantoja,John J. Salzer,Marco Scodeggio,Evan D. Skillman,José M. Solanes,José M. Solanes,Carlos Valotto,Wim van Driel,Liese van Zee +40 more
TL;DR: The ALFALFA project as discussed by the authors uses a two-pass, minimum intrusion, drift scan observing technique that samples the same region of sky at two separate epochs to aid in the discrimination of cosmic signals from noise and terrestrial interference.
Journal ArticleDOI
Discovery of radio emission from the brown dwarf LP944-20
Edo Berger,S. Ball,K. M. Becker,Michael P. Clarke,Dale A. Frail,T. A. Fukuda,Ian M. Hoffman,R. Mellon,Emmanuel Momjian,N. W. Murphy,S. H. Teng,T. Woodruff,B. A. Zauderer,R. T. Zavala +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported the discovery of quiescent and flaring radio emission from LP944-20, with luminosities several orders of magnitude larger than predicted by the empirical relation, between the X-ray and radio luminosity that has been found for many types of stars.
Journal ArticleDOI
The GALEX Ultraviolet Virgo Cluster Survey (GUViCS) I. The UV luminosity function of the central 12 sq. deg
Alessandro Boselli,Samuel Boissier,Sebastien Heinis,Luca Cortese,O. Ilbert,Thomas M. Hughes,O. Cucciati,J. I. Davies,Laura Ferrarese,Riccardo Giovanelli,Martha P. Haynes,Maarten Baes,C. Xilouris +56 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors constructed mosaics of the FUV and near ultraviolet (NUV) diffuse emission over a large sky region (RA 12 to 13 h, Dec 0 to 20 deg) surrounding the Virgo cluster, using all the GALEX available data in the area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chávez +36 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the COSMOS H i Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES) with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (GVL) was conducted to simultaneously observe neutral hydrogen (H i) in galaxies over large volumes at high redshifts.
Journal ArticleDOI
The spin temperature of high-redshift damped Lyman α systems
Nissim Kanekar,Jason X. Prochaska,Alain Smette,Sara L. Ellison,Emma V. Ryan-Weber,Emmanuel Momjian,F. Briggs,W. M. Lane,Jayaram N. Chengalur,T. Delafosse,J. Grave,D. Jacobsen,A. G. de Bruyn +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the temperature of neutral gas in high-redshift damped Lyman-α absorbers (DLAs) and found a strong 4σ difference between the Ts distributions in high and low-z (z < 2.4) DLA samples.
