TL;DR: The results suggest that genetic determinants of longitudinal and cross-sectional lung function differ and vary by asthma status, and genetic heterogeneity of lung function might be extensive.
Journal ArticleDOI
Passive Smoking Exposure: A Risk Factor for Chronic Bronchitis and Asthma in Adults?
Katja Radon,Kerstin Büsching,Joachim Heinrich,Heinz Erich Wichmann,Rudolf A. Jörres,Helgo Magnussen,Dennis Nowak +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the risk of respiratory symptoms related to passive smoke exposure among German adults within the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRS) and found that the risk for chronic bronchitis was significantly higher in subjects reporting involuntary tobacco smoke exposure in the workplace (odds ratio [OR], 1.90; 95% confidence interval [CI, 1.16 to 3.11].
Journal ArticleDOI
Atopy in children and parental social class.
TL;DR: The data confirmed the assumption that in formerly socialist countries social inequalities existed under the socialist system, which were reflected by a social gradient in health outcomes and support the hypothesis that increased access to modern lifestyle could be one reason for the increasing rates of atopic disorders during the last 3 decades.
Journal ArticleDOI
Elemental composition and reflectance of ambient fine particles at 21 European locations
Thomas Götschi,Marianne E. Hazenkamp-von Arx,Joachim Heinrich,Roberto Bono,Peter Burney,Bertil Forsberg,Deborah Jarvis,José Antonio Maldonado,Dan Norbäck,Willem B. Stern,Jordi Sunyer,Kjell Torén,Giuseppe Verlato,Simona Villani,Nino Künzli,Nino Künzli +15 more
TL;DR: In this paper, Elemental Composition and Light Absorbance of Ambient Fine Particles at 21 European Locations was performed at three different locations in 21 European locations: London, Paris, and New York.
Journal ArticleDOI
Change in prevalence of IgE sensitization and mean total IgE with age and cohort
Deborah Jarvis,Christina Luczynska,Susan Chinn,James Potts,Jordi Sunyer,Christer Janson,Cecilie Svanes,Nino Künzli,Bénédicte Leynaert,Joachim Heinrich,Marjan Kerkhof,Ursula Ackermann-Liebrich,Josep M. Antó,Isa Cerveri,Roberto de Marco,Thorarinn Gislason,Françoise Neukirch,Paul Vermeire,Matthias Wjst,Peter Burney +19 more
TL;DR: In this article, a cross-sectional study showed that the prevalence of IgE sensitization is lower in older age groups than younger age groups, which could reflect either a decrease in sensitization with aging or a higher prevalence of sensitization in more recent birth cohorts.
