Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term air pollution exposure and living close to busy roads are associated with COPD in women.
Tamara Schikowski,Dorothea Sugiri,Ulrich Ranft,Ulrike Gehring,Ulrike Gehring,Joachim Heinrich,H-Erich Wichmann,Ursula Krämer +7 more
TL;DR: Chronic exposure to PM10, NO2 and living near a major road might increase the risk of developing COPD and can have a detrimental effect on lung function, which was strongest affected by PM10 and traffic related exposure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Air pollution and markers of inflammation and coagulation in patients with coronary heart disease.
Regina Rückerl,Angela Ibald-Mulli,Wolfgang Koenig,Alexandra Schneider,Gabriele Woelke,Josef Cyrys,Joachim Heinrich,Victor J. Marder,Mark W. Frampton,H.-Erich Wichmann,Annette Peters +10 more
TL;DR: Increased levels of C-reactive protein above the 90th percentile were observed for an increase in air pollution concentrations of one interquartile range, suggesting that inflammation as well as parts of the coagulation pathway may contribute to the association between particulate air pollution and coronary events.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatial variation of PM2.5, PM10, PM2.5 absorbance and PMcoarse concentrations between and within 20 European study areas and the relationship with NO2 : results of the ESCAPE project
Marloes Eeftens,Ming-Yi Tsai,Ming-Yi Tsai,Ming-Yi Tsai,Christophe Ampe,Bernhard Anwander,Rob Beelen,Tom Bellander,Giulia Cesaroni,Marta Cirach,Josef Cyrys,Kees de Hoogh,Audrey de Nazelle,Frank de Vocht,Christophe Declercq,Audrius Dėdelė,Kirsten Thorup Eriksen,C Galassi,Regina Gražulevičienė,Georgios Grivas,Joachim Heinrich,Barbara Hoffmann,Minas Iakovides,Alex Ineichen,Alex Ineichen,Klea Katsouyanni,Michal Korek,Ursula Krämer,Thomas A. Stephanou,Dorothee Sugiri,Orsolya Udvardy,Éva Vaskövi,Gudrun Weinmayr,Gudrun Weinmayr,Bert Brunekreef,Gerard Hoek +49 more
TL;DR: The ESCAPE study as discussed by the authors investigated the relationship between long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution and health using cohort studies across Europe, and found substantial variability in spatial patterns of PM2.5, PM10 and PMcoarse.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors performed a meta-analysis of birth weight in 153,781 individuals, identifying 60 loci where fetal genotype was associated with birth weight (P < 5.5×10−8).
Journal ArticleDOI
Air pollution exposure and lung function in children: the ESCAPE project.
Ulrike Gehring,Olena Gruzieva,Raymond Agius,Rob Beelen,Adnan Custovic,Josef Cyrys,Marloes Eeftens,Claudia Flexeder,Elaine Fuertes,Joachim Heinrich,Barbara Hoffmann,Johan C. de Jongste,Marjan Kerkhof,Claudia Klümper,Michal Korek,Anna Mölter,Erica S. Schultz,Angela Simpson,Dorothea Sugiri,Magnus Svartengren,Andrea von Berg,Alet H. Wijga,Göran Pershagen,Bert Brunekreef +23 more
TL;DR: Exposure to air pollution may result in reduced lung function in schoolchildren, and estimated levels of NO2, NOx, PM2.5 at the current address, but not at the birth address, were associated with small decreases in lung function.
