Journal ArticleDOI
Air pollution from traffic and the development of respiratory infections and asthmatic and allergic symptoms in children
Michael Brauer,Gerard Hoek,Patricia van Vliet,Kees Meliefste,Paul Fischer,Alet H. Wijga,Laurens P. Koopman,Herman J. Neijens,Jorrit Gerritsen,Marjan Kerkhof,Joachim Heinrich,Tom Bellander,Bert Brunekreef +12 more
TL;DR: Positive associations with air pollutants are indicated for wheezing, physician-diagnosed asthma, ear/nose/throat infections, and flu/serious colds, but no associations were observed for the other health outcomes analyzed.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: This large scale meta-analysis of methylation data identified numerous loci involved in response to maternal smoking in pregnancy with persistence into later childhood and provide insights into mechanisms underlying effects of this important exposure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Air pollution and development of asthma, allergy and infections in a birth cohort.
Michael Brauer,Gerard Hoek,Henriette A. Smit,J. C. De Jongste,Jorrit Gerritsen,Dirkje S. Postma,Marjan Kerkhof,Bert Brunekreef +7 more
TL;DR: Air pollution was associated with respiratory infections and some measures of asthma and allergy during the first 4 yrs of life and positive associations between air pollution and specific sensitisation to common food allergens were found.
Journal ArticleDOI
Traffic-related air pollution and the development of asthma and allergies during the first 8 years of life.
Ulrike Gehring,Alet H. Wijga,Michael Brauer,Paul Fischer,Johan C. de Jongste,Marjan Kerkhof,Marieke Oldenwening,Henriette A. Smit,Bert Brunekreef +8 more
TL;DR: Exposure to traffic-related air pollution may cause asthma in children and positive associations with hay fever were found in nonmovers only, and no associations were found with atopic eczema, allergic sensitization, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Blood eosinophil count and prospective annual asthma disease burden: a UK cohort study
David Price,Anna Rigazio,Jonathan D. Campbell,Eugene R. Bleecker,Christopher Corrigan,Mike Thomas,Sally E. Wenzel,Andrew M. Wilson,Mary Buatti Small,Gokul Gopalan,Valerie L. Ashton,Anne Burden,Elizabeth V. Hillyer,Marjan Kerkhof,Ian D. Pavord +14 more
TL;DR: Patients with asthma and blood eosinophil counts greater than 400 cells per μL experience more severe exacerbations and have poorer asthma control, and a count-response relation exists between blood eOSinophils counts and asthma-related outcomes.
