TL;DR: In this article, the GIADA (Grain Impact Analyser and Dust Accumulator) experiment on the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft orbiting comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko was used to detect 35 outflowing grains of mass 10−10 to 10−7 kilograms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comet showers as a cause of mass extinctions
Piet Hut,Walter Alvarez,William P. Elder,Thor A. Hansen,Erle G. Kauffman,Gerta Keller,Eugene M. Shoemaker,Paul R. Weissman +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present three independent pieces of evidence supporting a connection between comet showers and clustering in terrestrial cratering and mass extinctions, and the temporal profile of a comet shower triggered by a star passing through the Oort cloud is calculated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer Experiment on Galileo
TL;DR: The Galileo Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) as discussed by the authors is a combination of imaging and spectroscopic methods, which can be used to map morphological features, while simultaneously determining their composition and mineralogy, providing data to investigate the evolution of surface geology.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: Data show that there was new material after impact that was compositionally different from that seen before impact, and the ratio of dust mass to gas mass in the ejecta was much larger than before impact.

TL;DR: Spectra for a 5-micrometer hot spot on Jupiter are consistent with the absence of a significant water cloud above 8 bars and with a depletion of water compared to that predicted for solar composition, corroborating results from the Galileo probe.
