Abstract: Persistent currents induced in hard superconductors (HSC) were investigated by measuring the resulting magnetic effects. The tubular HSC examined were Nb powder, Nb/sub 3/Sn, and 3Nb- Zr samples of uniform wall thickness and length large compared to the diameter. Experimental evidence is presented that in HSC the Lorentz force plays a crucial role in determining the critical current density and the critical persistent currents in decay with a measurable rate. Abstract: We show how the density-functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation potential ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}(\mathrm{r}}$) of a semiconductor is calculated from the self-energy operator \ensuremath{\Sigma}(r,r',\ensuremath{\omega}), and how \ensuremath{\Sigma} is obtained using the one-particle Green's function and the screened Coulomb interaction (the GW approximation). We discuss the nature of ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}$ and the self-energy in real space, and investigate features and trends found in Si, GaAs, AlAs, and diamond. In each case the calculated quasiparticle band structure is in good agreement with experiment, while the DFT band structure is surprisingly similar to that with the common local-density approximation (LDA); in particular, about 80% of the severe LDA band-gap error is shown to be inherent in DFT calculations, being accounted for by the discontinuity \ensuremath{\Delta} in ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}$ upon addition of an electron. The relationship of the calculated ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}$ to the LDA and its extensions is also examined.

Abstract: A parallel quadrature AM data transmission system may be implemented with a number of overlapping channels, each carrying a signaling rate b , spaced b/2 apart in frequency. When a large number of channels are used, the system allows transmission speeds very close to the Nyquist rate, with little sensitivity to delay and amplitude distortion of the transmission medium. The receiver requires precise phasing of the demodulating carriers and sampling times in order to keep crosstalk between channels small. In the presence of delay and amplitude distortion, better results are obtained when half cosine roll-offs are used for shaping each channel than for full cosine roll-off. This transmission scheme appears to be a promising technique for achieving good performance at high information rates over bandlimited dispersive transmission media.
