Abstract: Coupled waveguide structures with sections of alternating phase mismatch are proposed as switched directional coupler configurations in which complete conversion of light from one guide to the other can be achieved by an electrical adjustment. These structures can be used to make electrooptic switches and amplitude modulators in integrated optics form with improved conversion and on-off ratios. Couplers with 2, 3, 4, and N sections of alternating phase mismatch are analyzed, and diagrams describing their switching characteristics are given.

Abstract: Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Optics Express, this paper reviews the evolution of optical fiber communication systems, and through a look at the previous 20 years attempts to extrapolate fiber-optic technology needs and potential solution paths over the coming 20 years. Well aware that 20-year extrapolations are inherently associated with great uncertainties, we still hope that taking a significantly longer-term view than most texts in this field will provide the reader with a broader perspective and will encourage the much needed out-of-the-box thinking to solve the very significant technology scaling problems ahead of us. Focusing on the optical transport and switching layer, we cover aspects of large-scale spatial multiplexing, massive opto-electronic arrays and holistic optics-electronics-DSP integration, as well as optical node architectures for switching and multiplexing of spatial and spectral superchannels.

Abstract: Transient photoluminescence measurements in poly($p$-phenylene vinylene) illustrate that exciton diffusion to quenching centers explains the nonexponential decay dynamics. The structure of these defects is studied by vibrational spectroscopy and the reason they act as quenchers is explained. In their absence, we observe nearly exponential photoluminescence decay with lifetime g 1 ns. The new picture of photoexcitations which emerges and its implications for polymer electroluminescent devices are discussed.

Abstract: Problems of signal processing arise in image synthesis because of transformations between continuous and discrete representations of 2D images. Aliasing introduced by sampling has received much attention in graphics, but reconstruction of samples into a continuous representation can also cause aliasing as well as other defects in image quality. The problem of designing a filter for use on images is discussed, and a new family of piecewise cubic filters are investigated as a practical demonstration. Two interesting cubic filters are found, one having good antialiasing properties and the other having good image-quality properties. It is also shown that reconstruction using derivative as well as amplitude values can greatly reduce aliasing.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a multi-carrier transmission scheme to overcome the problem of intercarrier interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In the proposed scheme, called universal-filtered multi-carrier (UFMC), a filtering operation is applied to a group of consecutive subcarriers (e.g. a given allocation of a single user) in order to reduce out-of-band sidelobe levels and subsequently minimize the potential ICI between adjacent users in case of asynchronous transmissions. We consider a coordinated multi-point (CoMP) reception technique, where a number of base stations (BSs) send the received signals from user equipments (UEs) to a CoMP central unit (CCU) for joint detection and processing. We examine the impact of carrier frequency offset (CFO) on the performance of the proposed scheme and compare the results with the performance of cyclic prefix based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) systems. We use computer experiments to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed multi-carrier scheme. The results indicate that the UFMC scheme outperforms the OFDM for both perfect and non-perfect frequency synchronization between the UEs and BSs.
