TL;DR: A method for discovering how the defining values of forthcoming body movements are specified is presented, consistant with a distinctive-feature view, rather than a hierarchical view, of motor programming.
Abstract: This article presents a method for discovering how the defining values of forthcoming body movements are specified. In experiments using this movement precuing technique, information is given about some, none, or all of the defining values of a movement that will be required when a reaction signal is presented. It is assumed that the reaction time (RT) reflects the time to specify those values that were not precued. With RTs for the same movements in different precue conditions, it is possible to make detailed inferences about the value specification process for each of the movements under study. The present experiments were concerned with the specification of the arm, direction, and extent (or distance) of aimed hand movements. In Experiment 1 it appeared that (a) specification times during RTs were longest for arm, shorter for direction, and shortest for extent, and (b) these values were specified serially but not in an invariant order. Experiment 2 suggested that the precuing effects obtained in Experiment 1 were not attributable to stimulus identification. Experiment 3 suggested that subjects in Experiment 1 did not use precues to prepare sets of possible movements from which the required movement was later selected. The model of value specification supported by the data is consistant with a distinctive-feature view, rather than a hierarchical view, of motor programming.

TL;DR: In this article, the scaling of fully depleted SOI devices is considered and the concept of controlling horizontal leakage through vertical structures is highlighted, and several structural variations of conventional SOI structures are discussed in terms of a natural length scale to guide the design.
Abstract: Scaling the Si MOSFET is reconsidered. Requirements on subthreshold leakage control force conventional scaling to use high doping as the device dimension penetrates into the deep-submicrometer regime, leading to an undesirably large junction capacitance and degraded mobility. By studying the scaling of fully depleted SOI devices, the important concept of controlling horizontal leakage through vertical structures is highlighted. Several structural variations of conventional SOI structures are discussed in terms of a natural length scale to guide the design. The concept of vertical doping engineering can also be realized in bulk Si to obtain good subthreshold characteristics without large junction capacitance or heavy channel doping. >

TL;DR: In this article, the same authors reported the synthesis of the related compound HgBa2CuO4+δ (Hg-1201), with only one CuO2 layer per unit cell, and showed that it is superconducting below 94 K.
Abstract: FOLLOWING the discovery1 of high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity in doped La2CuO4, several families of related compounds have been discovered which have layers of CuO2 as the essential requirement for superconductivity: the highest transition temperatures so far have been found for thallium-bearing compounds2. Recently the mercury-bearing compound HgBa2Rcu2O6+δ (Hg-1212) was synthesized3 (where R is a rare-earth element), with a structure similar to the thallium-bearing superconductor TlBa2CaCu2O7 (Tl-1212), which has one T1O layer and two CuO2 layers per unit cell, and a Tc of 85 K (ref. 2). But in spite of its resemblance to Tl-1212, Hg-1212 was found not to be superconducting. Here we report the synthesis of the related compound HgBa2CuO4+δ (Hg-1201), with only one CuO2 layer per unit cell, and show that it is superconducting below 94 K. Its structure is similar to that of Tl-1201 (which has a Tc of < 10 K)4, but its transition temperature is considerably higher. The availability of a material with high Tc but only a single metal oxide (HgO) layer may be important for technological applications, as it seems that a smaller spacing between CuO2 planes leads to better superconducting properties in a magnetic field5.

TL;DR: The spectral distribution of photon generation for the photon-radiative recombination of electrons and holes in germanium is determined from known optical properties by application of the principle of detailed balance.
Abstract: The spectral distribution of the rate of photon generation for the photon-radiative recombination of electrons and holes in germanium is determined from known optical properties by application of the principle of detailed balance. Quantities characterizing the process are evaluated: The thermal equilibrium recombination rate at 300\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K is 1.57\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{13}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ ${\mathrm{sec}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, which corresponds to a recombination cross section of 2.9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}21}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ and a decay time for a small disturbance in carrier concentration in intrinsic material of 0.75 sec. The extension to the steady-state case of added current carriers is given, and estimates are included of the dependence of the quantities on temperature.
