Abstract: According to its proponents, open source style software development has the capacity to compete successfully, and perhaps in many cases displace, traditional commercial development methods. In order to begin investigating such claims, we examine the development process of a major open source application, the Apache web server. By using email archives of source code change history and problem reports we quantify aspects of developer participation, core team size, code ownership, productivity, defect density, and problem resolution interval for this OSS project. This analysis reveals a unique process, which performs well on important measures. We conclude that hybrid forms of development that borrow the most effective techniques from both the OSS and commercial worlds may lead to high performance software processes.

Abstract: Sigma delta modulation is viewed as a technique that employs integration and feedback to move quantization noise out of baseband. This technique may be iterated by placing feedback loop around feedback loop, but when three or more loops are used the circuit can latch into undesirable overloading modes. In the desired mode, a simple linear theory gives a good description of the modulation even when the quantization has only two levels. A modulator that employs double integration and two-level quantization is easy to implement and is tolerant of parameter variation. At sampling rates of 1 MHz it provides resolution equivalent to 16 bit PCM for voiceband signals. Digital filters that are suitable for converting the modulation to PCM are also described.

Abstract: A computational algorithm for numerically evaluating the z -transform of a sequence of N samples is discussed. This algorithm has been named the chirp z -transform (CZT) algorithm. Using the CZT algorithm one can efficiently evaluate the z -transform at M points in the z -plane which lie on circular or spiral contours beginning at any arbitrary point in the z -plane. The angular spacing of the points is an arbitrary constant, and M and N are arbitrary integers. The algorithm is based on the fact that the values of the z -transform on a circular or spiral contour can be expressed as a discrete convolution. Thus one can use well-known high-speed convolution techniques to evaluate the transform efficiently. For M and N moderately large, the computation time is roughly proportional to (N+M) \log_{2}(N+M) as opposed to being proportional to N . M for direct evaluation of the z -transform at M points.
