TL;DR: It is reported that bats using constant frequency–frequency-modulated sounds (CF–FM bats) and FM bats for echolocation have a larger volume of midbrain nuclei and cerebellum relative to the size of the brain than rodents (mice and rats).
Abstract: Although echolocating bats and other mammals share the basic design of laryngeal apparatus for sound production and auditory system for sound reception, they have a specialized laryngeal mechanism for ultrasonic sound emissions as well as a highly developed auditory system for processing species-specific sounds. Because the sounds used by bats for echolocation and rodents for communication are quite different, there must be differences in the central nervous system devoted to producing and processing species-specific sounds between them. The present study examines the difference in the relative size of several brain structures and expression of auditory-related and vocal-related proteins in the central nervous system of echolocation bats and rodents. Here, we report that bats using constant frequency-frequency-modulated sounds (CF-FM bats) and FM bats for echolocation have a larger volume of midbrain nuclei (inferior and superior colliculi) and cerebellum relative to the size of the brain than rodents (mice and rats). However, the former have a smaller volume of the cerebrum and olfactory bulb, but greater expression of otoferlin and forkhead box protein P2 than the latter. Although the size of both midbrain colliculi is comparable in both CF-FM and FM bats, CF-FM bats have a larger cerebrum and greater expression of otoferlin and forkhead box protein P2 than FM bats. These differences in brain structure and protein expression are discussed in relation to their biologically relevant sounds and foraging behavior.

TL;DR: Compared with the traditional Chinese medicine Shenyankangfu tablets applied in the control group, the recombinant human growth hormone used for patients with chronic nephrotic syndrome can improve the clinical symptoms more quickly, regulate the protein metabolism and reduce the inflammatory response in the body, which also has fewer adverse reactions and higher safety.
Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of recombinant human growth hormone on protein malnutrition and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and interleukin-2 (IL-2) gene expressions in chronic nephrotic syndrome. Eighty patients with chronic nephrotic syndrome were admitted to our hospital. The patients were included in the study period from January 2015 to December 2016 and were divided into two groups (40 cases in each group) according to the random number method. All the patients enrolled received symptomatic and supportive treatment. The observation group was injected subcutaneously with recombinant human growth hormone, while the control group was treated with Shenyankangfu tablets. The recovery time of the clinical symptoms, change in serum protein, caloric intake and protein metabolism after intervention were compared between the two groups. Changes in serum cystatin C, IGF-1 and IL-2 before intervention, and at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after intervention were detected, and the adverse reactions in the two groups were observed during the treatment. After intervention, the improvement time of proteinuria, hypoproteinemia, edema and hyperlipidemia in the observation group was significantly shorter than that in the control group (P<0.05). The expression of transferrin, pre-albumin, albumin and total protein in the observation group was significantly superior increased compared to those in the observation group prior to intervention and the control group after intervention (P<0.05). In addition the caloric intake, protein intake and urea nitrogen survival rate in the observation group were significantly superior to those in the observation group prior to intervention and the control group after intervention (P<0.05). At 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after intervention, the levels of serum cystatin C, IGF-1 and IL-2 in the observation group were markedly obviously lower than those in the control group during the same period (P<0.05). The total proportion of allergy, systemic pruritus, nausea and vomiting, abdominal distension and abdominal pain in the observation group was obviously lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). Compared with the traditional Chinese medicine Shenyankangfu tablets applied in the control group, the recombinant human growth hormone used for patients with chronic nephrotic syndrome can improve the clinical symptoms more quickly, regulate the protein metabolism and reduce the inflammatory response in the body, which also has fewer adverse reactions and higher safety.

TL;DR: The results show that increase of IP of the femur and tibia is the cause of pain and pathologic changes of the knee joint and the treatment and its improvement is shown.
Abstract: The intraosseous pressure (IP) in the femur and tibia near knee of 21 patients with pain of knee region was measured and the arthroscopic examination of their knee joints was performed in past 3 years. The IP of femoral and tibial condyles in these 21 patients were averaged 0.143 +/- 0.011 kPa and 0.180 +/- 0.022 kPa, respectively. There were 16 patients (76.19%) whose IP of femoral condyle was higher than normal value (0.130 +/- 0.024 kPa, P < 0.01) and 18 patients (85.7%) whose IP of tibial condyle was higher than normal (0.105 +/- 0.25 kPa, P < 0.01). The average intracapsular pressure of the knee of 21 patients was 0.135 +/- 0.35 kPa and in 18 of them (85.7%) it was higher than the normal value (0.120 +/- 0.020 kPa, P < 0.01). The results show that increase of IP of the femur and tibia is the cause of pain and pathologic changes of the knee joint. The effect of the change of IP on physiology and pathology of the femur and tibia, the idiopathic intraosseous hypertension at the knee region, the different change of IP in various conditions of the knee, and the treatment and its improvement were discussed.

TL;DR: The glycoprotein Ⅰb Kozak-5T/C C/C genotype and beta Fib-148C/T gene T allele may be the genetic factors for susceptibility to cerebral infarction, but there is no disequilibrium linkage between the two gene polymorphisms.
Abstract: Objective To study the relationship between platelet membrane glycoprotein Ⅰb Kozak sequence-5T/C gene, beta fibrinogen-148C/T gene polymorphism and cerebral infarction in Chinese Leizhou peninsula Hans. Methods A case-control study of 148 cases of cerebral infarction(CI group) confirmed by CT or MRI and 130 healthy controls(control group) was carried out.The platelet membrane glycoprotein Ⅰb Kozak sequence-5T/C and beta fibrinogen-148C/T genotypes and gene frequencies were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP).Results The frequencies of beta-Fib-148C/T gene T allele in CI group and control group were 30.1% and 21.9%,respectively(P0.05).Beta Fib-148C/T gene T allele carriers had 2.023-fold increased risk for ischemic cerebrovascular events(OR= 2.023,95% confidence interval:1.157-3.537,P=0.0134) over C/C genotype carriers. The frequencies of GPⅠb Kozak T/C C allele in CI group and control group were 48.7% and 39.6%,respectively(P0.05).Homozygous C/C genotype carriers had 2.541-fold increased risk for ischemic cerebrovascular events(OR=2.541,95% confidence interval:1.124-5.744,P= 0.0250) over T/T or T/C genotype carriers together. The coefficient of linkage disequilibrium for the two gene polymorphisms was-0.018(P0.05)。Conclusions The glycoprotein Ⅰb Kozak-5T/C C/C genotype and beta Fib-148C/T gene T allele may be the genetic factors for susceptibility to cerebral infarction, but there is no disequilibrium linkage between the two gene polymorphisms.
