TL;DR: A simple statistical model of daily precipitation based on the gamma distribution is applied to summer (JJA in Northern Hemisphere, DJF in Southern Hemisphere) data from eight countries: Canada, the United States, Mexico, the former Soviet Union, China, Australia, Norway, and Poland as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A simple statistical model of daily precipitation based on the gamma distribution is applied to summer (JJA in Northern Hemisphere, DJF in Southern Hemisphere) data from eight countries: Canada, the United States, Mexico, the former Soviet Union, China, Australia, Norway, and Poland. These constitute more than 40% of the global land mass, and more than 80% of the extratropical land area. It is shown that the shape parameter of this distribution remains relatively stable, while the scale parameter is most variable spatially and temporally. This implies that the changes in mean monthly precipitation totals tend to have the most influence on the heavy precipitation rates in these countries. Observations show that in each country under consideration (except China), mean summer precipitation has increased by at least 5% in the past century. In the USA, Norway, and Australia the frequency of summer precipitation events has also increased, but there is little evidence of such increases in any of the countries considered during the past fiffty years. A scenario is considered, whereby mean summer precipitation increases by 5% with no change in the number of days with precipitation or the shape parameter. When applied in the statistical model, the probability of daily precipitation exceeding 25.4 mm (1 inch) in northern countries (Canada, Norway, Russia, and Poland) or 50.8 mm (2 inches) in mid-latitude countries (the USA, Mexico, China, and Australia) increases by about 20% (nearly four times the increase in mean). The contribution of heavy rains (above these thresholds) to the total 5% increase of precipitation is disproportionally high (up to 50%), while heavy rain usually constitutes a significantly smaller fraction of the precipitation events and totals in extratropical regions (but up to 40% in the tropics, e.g., in southern Mexico). Scenarios with moderate changes in the number of days with precipitation coupled with changes in the scale parameter were also investigated and found to produce smaller increases in heavy rainfall but still support the above conclusions. These scenarios give changes in heavy rainfall which are comparable to those observed and are consistent with the greenhouse-gas-induced increases in heavy precipitation simulated by some climate models for the next century. In regions with adequate data coverage such as the eastern two-thirds of contiguous United States, Norway, eastern Australia, and the European part of the former USSR, the statistical model helps to explain the disproportionate high changes in heavy precipitation which have been observed.

TL;DR: It is established that inhibitory phosphorylation of Acc by Ampk is essential for the control of lipid metabolism and, in the setting of obesity, for metformin-induced improvements in insulin action.
Abstract: The obesity epidemic has led to an increased incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes. AMP-activated protein kinase (Ampk) regulates energy homeostasis and is activated by cellular stress, hormones and the widely prescribed type 2 diabetes drug metformin. Ampk phosphorylates mouse acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (Acc1; refs. 3,4) at Ser79 and Acc2 at Ser212, inhibiting the conversion of acetyl-CoA to malonyl-CoA. The latter metabolite is a precursor in fatty acid synthesis and an allosteric inhibitor of fatty acid transport into mitochondria for oxidation. To test the physiological impact of these phosphorylation events, we generated mice with alanine knock-in mutations in both Acc1 (at Ser79) and Acc2 (at Ser212) (Acc double knock-in, AccDKI). Compared to wild-type mice, these mice have elevated lipogenesis and lower fatty acid oxidation, which contribute to the progression of insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and NAFLD, but not obesity. Notably, AccDKI mice made obese by high-fat feeding are refractory to the lipid-lowering and insulin-sensitizing effects of metformin. These findings establish that inhibitory phosphorylation of Acc by Ampk is essential for the control of lipid metabolism and, in the setting of obesity, for metformin-induced improvements in insulin action.

TL;DR: Not only are the nanoemulsions created in this work some of the smallest reported, but they are also thermodynamically stable to Ostwald ripening when at least 50% of the oil phase is an insoluble triglyceride.
Abstract: The formation of stable transparent nanoemulsions poses two challenges: the ability to initially create an emulsion where the entire droplet size distribution is below 80 nm, and the subsequent stabilization of this emulsion against Ostwald ripening. The physical properties of the oil phase and the nature of the surfactant layer were found to have a considerable impact on nanoemulsion formation and stabilization. Nanoemulsions made with high viscosity oils, such as long chain triglycerides (LCT), were considerably larger (D = 120 nm) than nanoemulsions prepared with low viscosity oils such as hexadecane (D = 80 nm). The optimization of surfactant architecture, and differential viscosity ηD/ηC, has led to the formation of remarkably small nanoemulsions. With average sizes below 40 nm they are some of the smallest homogenized emulsions ever reported. What is more remarkable is that LCT nanoemulsions do not undergo Ostwald ripening and are physically stable for over 3 months. Ostwald ripening is prevented by...

TL;DR: Details of progress in breeding to improve W(T) and yield of wheat for Australian environments where crop growth is strongly dependent on subsoil moisture stored from out-of-season rains are presented and other opportunities to improve crop yield are assessed.
Abstract: Greater yield per unit rainfall is one of the most important challenges in dryland agriculture. Improving intrinsic water-use efficiency (W(T)), the ratio of CO(2) assimilation rate to transpiration rate at the stomata, may be one means of achieving this goal. Carbon isotope discrimination (Delta(13)C) is recognized as a reliable surrogate for W(T) and there have now been numerous studies which have examined the relationship between crop yield and W(T) (measured as Delta(13)C). These studies have shown the relationship between yield and W(T) to be highly variable. The impact on crop yield of genotypic variation in W(T) will depend on three factors: (i) the impact of variation in W(T) on crop growth rate, (ii) the impact of variation in W(T) on the rate of crop water use, and (iii) how growth and water use interact over the crop's duration to produce grain yield. The relative importance of these three factors will differ depending on the crop species being grown and the nature of the cropping environment. Here we consider these interactions using (i) the results of field trials with bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), durum wheat (T. turgidum L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) that have examined the association between yield and Delta(13)C and (ii) computer simulations with the SIMTAG wheat crop growth model. We present details of progress in breeding to improve W(T) and yield of wheat for Australian environments where crop growth is strongly dependent on subsoil moisture stored from out-of-season rains and assess other opportunities to improve crop yield using W(T).
