Abstract: Condition monitoring (CM) has already been proven to be a cost effective means of enhancing reliability and improving customer service in power equipment, such as transformers and rotating electrical machinery. CM for power semiconductor devices in power electronic converters is at a more embryonic stage; however, as progress is made in understanding semiconductor device failure modes, appropriate sensor technologies, and signal processing techniques, this situation will rapidly improve. This technical review is carried out with the aim of describing the current state of the art in CM research for power electronics. Reliability models for power electronics, including dominant failure mechanisms of devices are described first. This is followed by a description of recently proposed CM techniques. The benefits and limitations of these techniques are then discussed. It is intended that this review will provide the basis for future developments in power electronics CM.

Abstract: The soluble glutathione transferases (GSTs, EC 2.5.1.18) are encoded by a large and diverse gene family in plants, which can be divided on the basis of sequence identity into the phi, tau, theta, zeta and lambda classes. The theta and zeta GSTs have counterparts in animals but the other classes are plant-specific and form the focus of this article. The genome of Arabidopsis thaliana contains 48 GST genes, with the tau and phi classes being the most numerous. The GST proteins have evolved by gene duplication to perform a range of functional roles using the tripeptide glutathione (GSH) as a cosubstrate or coenzyme. GSTs are predominantly expressed in the cytosol, where their GSH-dependent catalytic functions include the conjugation and resulting detoxification of herbicides, the reduction of organic hydroperoxides formed during oxidative stress and the isomerization of maleylacetoacetate to fumarylacetoacetate, a key step in the catabolism of tyrosine. GSTs also have non-catalytic roles, binding flavonoid natural products in the cytosol prior to their deposition in the vacuole. Recent studies have also implicated GSTs as components of ultraviolet-inducible cell signaling pathways and as potential regulators of apoptosis. Although sequence diversification has produced GSTs with multiple functions, the structure of these proteins has been highly conserved. The GSTs thus represent an excellent example of how protein families can diversify to fulfill multiple functions while conserving form and structure.

Abstract: Pressure-temperature-time paths followed by arc magmas ascending through the lithosphere dictate the phase assemblage that crystallizes, and hence the compositions of liquid fractionates. Here we use La/Yb and Dy/Yb versus SiO2 relationships from selected volcanoes to show that amphibole is an important mineral during differentiation of arc magma. Production of intermediate and silicic arc magmas occurs as magmas stall and cool in the mid-lower crust, where amphibole is stable. Because amphibole is rarely a phenocryst phase, we term this “cryptic amphibole fractionation.” If this process is as widespread as our investigation suggests, then (1) amphibole cumulates may act as an effective filter for water dissolved in mantle-derived magmas; (2) amphibole cumulates may act as a fertile source of intracrustal melts and fluids; and (3) recycling of amphibole cumulates has the potential to return incompatible trace elements and water to the mantle.

Abstract: We present a novel implementation of compressed suffix arrays exhibiting new tradeoffs between search time and space occupancy for a given text (or sequence) of n symbols over an alphabet σ, where each symbol is encoded by lgvσv bits. We show that compressed suffix arrays use just nHh + σ bits, while retaining full text indexing functionalities, such as searching any pattern sequence of length m in O(m lg vσv + polylog(n)) time. The term Hh ≤ lg vσv denotes the hth-order empirical entropy of the text, which means that our index is nearly optimal in space apart from lower-order terms, achieving asymptotically the empirical entropy of the text (with a multiplicative constant 1). If the text is highly compressible so that Hn = o(1) and the alphabet size is small, we obtain a text index with o(m) search time that requires only o(n) bits. Further results and tradeoffs are reported in the paper.
