Abstract: Although Indonesia is experiencing one of the most complex transformations of social forestry policy in the world, there is a need to step back and more closely examine the politics, ecologies, and economies that provide context for its implementation. This introduction offers a synthesis of the collection of special section submissions in Forest and Society. We begin by navigating the current social forestry moment by presenting a heuristic for identifying the discourses underpinning the rapid expansion in support of social forestry schemes. These perspectives are fragmented across four continuously contested discourses: community-first, legal-first, conservation-first, and development-first. We then contextualize the historical developments that brought social forestry into its current form by laying out a genealogy of its antecedents across three distinct generations. These three generations of social forestry are roughly aligned with the overall political changes that have taken place in Indonesia, each of which engaged in their own mechanisms for defining and administering social forestry. The first generation roughly follows the period of New Order rule; a second generation began as the regime unraveled, resulting in a period of reform and restructuring of the political system. At this time, new legal frameworks were introduced, followed by the development of new implementation mechanisms. We argue that social forestry has entered a third distinct period that is characterized by the expanding interests of numerous stakeholders to formalize permitting schemes. This third generation presents new possibilities for redefining land management on Indonesia’s vast national forests. The contributions to this special issue shed new light on the overall implications of these changes. We divide the findings across submissions, covering broad topical engagement on the economies, ecologies, and politics at different governing scales. From these findings we suggest a course for future research, and identify key policy challenges for the future of social forestry and for Indonesia.

Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancers with a high mortality rate. Late diagnosis and poor prognosis are still a major drawback since curative therapies such as liver resection and liver transplantation are effective only for an early stage HCC. Development of novel molecular targeting therapies against HCC may provide new options that will improve the efficiency of the diagnosis and the success of the therapy, thus ameliorating the life expectancy of the patients. The aptamer is an oligonucleotide nanomedicine that has high binding affinity and specificity to small and large target molecules in the intracellular and extracellular environment with agonist or antagonist function. Currently, several aptamers for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes are under development to recognize different molecules of HCC. In in vitro models, the aptamer has been shown to be able to reduce the growth of HCC cells and increase the sensitivity to conventional chemotherapies. In in vivo mouse models, aptamer could induce cell apoptosis with antitumor activity. Overall data had shown that aptamer has limited toxicity and might be safe in clinical application. This review summarizes recent information of aptamer as a potential oligonucleotide nanomedicine tool, in diagnostics, targeted therapy, and as drug delivery nano-vehicles.

Abstract: Nanocomposites, activated carbon/polyvinyl alcohol (AC/PVA) filled with Fe to form Fe/AC/PVA, were characterized by using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and vector network analyzer (VNA). The crystal orientations from Fe are (104), (110), and (200) and the bonding formations of AC are O-H, C-H, and C=C show existence in nanocomposites, which may be due to the Fe that has been filled the pore of AC via a chemical bond. 20% AC (3 mm in thickness) in nanocomposites shows higher performance absorption for C-band (4.65 GHz) with maximum reflection loss of −32.5 dB.

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the ability of bacterial isolated from rhizosphere of potato plants in producing exopolysaccharide and growth stimulating substances such as Indole Acetic Acid (IAA).The soil samples were taken from three different land of slopes at elevation >1500 m above sea level at Malino,South Sulawesi. However, only 34 isolates formed a thick slime or mucoid when cultured onMacConcey medium.The ability of exopolysaccharide isolated bacterial in producing IAA was assayed in the presence of L-Tryptofan asa precursor.The result revealed that these 34 isolates were be able to produce IAA in range of 0.40 to 21.14 mg/L An isolate coded P2.67 was the most potential bacterium to produce IAA (21.14 ppm) followed by P2.56 (17.36 ppm), P3.42 (12.21 ppm), and P3.70 (9.21 ppm).

Abstract: Background The prevalence of asthma and atopic disease has been reported to be low in low income countries, however helminth infections are likely to be high among these communities. The question of whether helminth infections play a role in allergic diseases can best be addressed by intervention studies. None of the studies so far have been based on a large scale placebo-controlled trial.
