Abstract: The three grouper species most heavily fished for the live reef fish trade (LRFT) in Indonesia are Plectopomus leopardus (greatest catch volume), and two species classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List: Plectropomus areolatus and Epinephelus polyphekadion. Understanding the reproductive biology of these fishes is essential for sustainable management, but relevant data are limited. This study aimed to determine reproductive dynamics, so as to inform management measures to maintain the reproductive capacity of these groupers. Grouper gonad samples collected from fish caught for the LRFT were analyzed histologically. Data were also collected from participatory mapping and interviews with fishermen, and underwater monitoring of three known spawning aggregation sites in the Wakatobi National Park, Eastern Indonesia. Based on observed gonad development, the respective lengths and weights at first maturity were: 37.7 cm and 759 g (P. leopardus); 36.65 cm and 771.2 g (P. areolatus); 36.95 cm and 889.9 g (E. polyphekadion). The mean weight of the groupers market-based sampled was higher than the size at first sexual maturity. Sex transition was observed in P. leopardus; sex reversal was not observed in E. polyphekadion, and the sex pattern of P. areolatus was unresolved. Based on the fisher surveys and spawning aggregation monitoring, spawning occurs around the new moon from September to April, with reproductive peaks in November and December. Abstract: Describing life history dynamics of functionally important species is critical for successful management. Barrel sponges (Xestospongia spp.) fill ecologically important roles on coral reefs due to their large size and water column interactions. Studies of Caribbean X. muta suggest they may be up to 1000 s of years old. However, nothing is known of barrel sponge growth rates outside the Caribbean. We assessed Indo-Pacific barrel sponge demography with a focus on specific growth rate (SGR), density, and mean volume across four sites of varying habitat quality. Four growth models were compared using Akaike’s Information Criterion using a multi-model inference approach. Age was extrapolated and validated based on sponge size on a shipwreck of known age. Sponges from different sites showed differences in density, volume gained, and mean volume, but not growth rates. Interestingly, SGRs were slightly slower than that of X. muta, yet growth models supported rapid growth; published estimates of comparably sized X. muta were over twice as old as Indo-Pacific sponges (53–55 as compared to 23 years of age, respectively), although extrapolation errors are likely to increase with sponge size. This suggests that barrel sponge growth rates in the Indo-Pacific might be more comparable to Pines rather than Redwoods.

Abstract: Introduction Peripheral leukocytes can worsen brain damage due to the release of cytotoxic mediators that interfere the blood brain barrier function. One of the oxidants released by activation leukocyte is hypochlorite acid (HOCl) which is formed through the myeloperoxidase (MPO)-H2O2-Cl- system. The neuroprotective effects of an experimental anti-inflammatory drug Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE) tested in a Traumatic brain injury (TBI) model using Myeloperoxidase (MPO) analysis. Methods This study compares the acute inflammatory response to TBI over time, as measured by MPO activity. Adult Sprague mice were treated for head trauma with marmarou model. At 24 h before trauma, all animals were blood test (n = 10) to examine MPO, then the animal was divided into 2 groups of injured animals treated with CAPE (n = 5), and those not treated with CAPE (n = 5). We used the MPO test to identify the level of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) on day 4 and day 7. Results Showed an increase in PMNL infiltration in CAPE untreated animals, this change significantly (P < 0.05) decreased at group of animals treated with CAPE. MPO serum activity in the CAPE untreated group vs treated with CAPE on day 4 ± 11920410.076 (Standard deviation {SD} 895355.169) vs 6663184.485 (SD 895355.169) p < 0,05 and on day 7 ± 14223286.992 (SD 802762.401) vs 9284222.028 (SD 953098.093) p < 0,05. These data indicate that MPO activity after TBI increases on day 4 also on day 7 and improves after being treated with CAPE. Conclusion CAPE can reduce Neutrophil serum levels there by preventing brain damage in TBI.
