TL;DR: The ability of graphene, thin metal films, and graphene/metal hybrid systems to undergo photothermal optical modulation with depths as large as >70% over a wide spectral range extending from the visible to the terahertz frequency domains is demonstrated.
Abstract: Nanoscale photothermal effects enable important applications in cancer therapy, imaging and catalysis. These effects also induce substantial changes in the optical response experienced by the probing light, thus suggesting their application in all-optical modulation. Here, we demonstrate the ability of graphene, thin metal films, and graphene/metal hybrid systems to undergo photothermal optical modulation with depths as large as >70% over a wide spectral range extending from the visible to the terahertz frequency domains. We envision the use of ultrafast pump laser pulses to raise the electron temperature of graphene during a picosecond timescale in which its mid-infrared plasmon resonances undergo dramatic shifts and broadenings, while visible and near-infrared plasmons in the neighboring metal films are severely attenuated by the presence of hot graphene electrons. Our study opens a promising avenue toward the active photothermal manipulation of the optical response in atomically thin materials with potential applications in ultrafast light modulation.

TL;DR: In this paper, a single near-infrared photon detection was demonstrated by coupling photons to the localized surface plasmons of a graphene-based Josephson junction, which revealed the critical role of quasiparticles generated by the absorbed photon in the detection mechanism.
Abstract: Josephson junctions are superconducting devices used as high-sensitivity magnetometers and voltage amplifiers as well as the basis of high-performance cryogenic computers and superconducting quantum computers. Although device performance can be degraded by the generation of quasiparticles formed from broken Cooper pairs, this phenomenon also opens opportunities to sensitively detect electromagnetic radiation. We demonstrate single near-infrared photon detection by coupling photons to the localized surface plasmons of a graphene-based Josephson junction. Using the photon-induced switching statistics of the current-biased device, we reveal the critical role of quasiparticles generated by the absorbed photon in the detection mechanism. The photon sensitivity will enable a high-speed, low-power optical interconnect for future superconducting computing architectures.

TL;DR: In this article, a new technique for entanglement detection in large ensembles of particles is proposed, which is both computationally and experimentally efficient in systems involving tens of particles.
Abstract: Quantum entanglement lies at the heart of proposals for encoding and manipulating information in a quantum computer, but detecting its presence in large ensembles of particles remains challenging. A new technique for entanglement detection promises to be both computationally and experimentally efficient in systems involving tens of particles.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors generalize the previous results by demonstrating that one can construct self-testing protocols based on the chained Bell inequalities, defined for two devices implementing an arbitrary number of two-output measurements.
Abstract: Self-testing is a device-independent technique based on non-local correlations whose aim is to certify the effective uniqueness of the quantum state and measurements needed to produce these correlations. It is known that the maximal violation of some Bell inequalities suffices for this purpose. However, most of the existing self-testing protocols for two devices exploit the well-known Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt Bell inequality or modifications of it, and always with two measurements per party. Here, we generalize the previous results by demonstrating that one can construct self-testing protocols based on the chained Bell inequalities, defined for two devices implementing an arbitrary number of two-output measurements. On the one hand, this proves that the quantum state and measurements leading to the maximal violation of the chained Bell inequality are unique. On the other hand, in the limit of a large number of measurements, our approach allows one to self-test the entire plane of measurements spanned by the Pauli matrices X and Z. Our results also imply that the chained Bell inequalities can be used to certify two bits of perfect randomness.

TL;DR: In this article, the existence of quantum droplets in a two-species one dimensional Bose-Hubbard model is demonstrated and the phase diagram of the system is presented and multiple phases are identified.
Abstract: In this paper, the authors demonstrate the existence of quantum droplets in a two-species one dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. The phase diagram of the system is presented and multiple phases are identified. Specifically, in the strongly interacting regime quantum droplets exhibit pair-superfluidity characterized by the appearance of phase coherence of pairs but not of individual atoms.
