Abstract: We explore the interplay between tunneling and interatomic interactions in the dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction. We tune the scattering length of an atomic ^{39}K Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well trap to investigate regimes inaccessible to other superconducting or superfluid systems. In the limit of small-amplitude oscillations, we study the transition from Rabi to plasma oscillations by crossing over from attractive to repulsive interatomic interactions. We observe a critical slowing down in the oscillation frequency by increasing the strength of an attractive interaction up to the point of a quantum phase transition. With sufficiently large initial oscillation amplitude and repulsive interactions, the system enters the macroscopic quantum self-trapping regime, where we observe coherent undamped oscillations with a self-sustained average imbalance of the relative well population. The exquisite agreement between theory and experiments enables the observation of a broad range of many body coherent dynamical regimes driven by tunable tunneling energy, interactions and external forces, with applications spanning from atomtronics to quantum metrology.

This randomness generation strategy satisfies the stringent requirements for unpredictable basis choices in current "loophole-free Bell tests" of local realism [Hensen et al., Nature (London) 526, 682 (2015); Giustina et al., this issue, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 250401 (2015); Shalm et al., preceding Letter, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 250402 (2015)].

Abstract: We predict that the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling, stemming from the transverse electric--transverse magnetic energy splitting, and the Zeeman effect in semiconductor microcavities supporting exciton-polariton quasiparticles, results in the appearance of unidirectional linear topological edge states when the top microcavity mirror is patterned to form a truncated dislocated Lieb lattice of cylindrical pillars Periodic nonlinear edge states are found to emerge from the linear ones They are strongly localized across the interface and they are remarkably robust in comparison to their counterparts in honeycomb lattices Such robustness makes possible the existence of nested unidirectional dark solitons that move steadily along the lattice edge

Abstract: We report compelling evidence for a “gray” condensate of dipolar excitons, electrically polarised in a 25 nm wide GaAs quantum well. The condensate is composed by a macroscopic population of dark excitons coherently coupled to a lower population of bright excitons. To create the exciton condensate we use an all-optical approach in order to produce microscopic traps which confine a dense exciton gas that yet exhibits an anomalously weak photoemission at sub-kelvin temperatures. This is the first fingerprint for the “gray” condensate. It is then confirmed by the macroscopic spatial coherence and the linear polarization of the weak excitonic photoluminescence emitted from the trap, as theoretically predicted.

Abstract: Near-infrared light-emitting diodes based on solution-processed semiconductors, such as organics, halide perovskites and colloidal quantum dots, have emerged as a viable technological platform for biomedical applications, night vision, surveillance and optical communications. The recently gained increased understanding of the relationship between materials structure and photophysical properties has enabled the design of efficient emitters leading to devices with external quantum efficiencies exceeding 20%. Despite considerable strides made, challenges remain in achieving high radiance, reducing efficiency roll-off and extending operating lifetime. This Review summarizes recent advances on emissive materials synthetic methods and device key attributes that collectively contribute to improved performance of the fabricated light-emitting devices. A summary of recent advances in the near-infrared light-emitting diodes that are fabricated by solution-processed means, with coverage of devices based on organic semiconductors, halide perovskites and colloidal quantum dots.
