Abstract: For the first time, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from herring sperm has been employed as a novel flame retardant system for enhancing the thermal stability and flame retardant properties of cotton fabrics. Indeed, DNA could be considered an intrinsically intumescent flame retardant as it contains the three main components that are usually present in an intumescent formulation, namely: the phosphate groups, able to produce phosphoric acid, the deoxyribose units acting as a carbon source and blowing agents (upon heating a (poly)saccharide dehydrates forming char and releasing water) and the nitrogen-containing bases (guanine, adenine, thymine, and cytosine) that may release ammonia. The flammability tests in horizontal configuration have clearly shown that after two applications of a methane flame for 3 s, the DNA-treated cotton fabrics do not burn at all. Furthermore, when exposed to an irradiative heat flux of 35 kW m−2, no ignition has been observed. Finally, an LOI value of 28% has been achieved for the treated fabrics as opposed to 18% of the untreated fabric.

Abstract: Petri nets in which random delays are associated with atomic transitions are defined in a comprehensive framework that contains most of the models already proposed in the literature. To include generally distributed firing times into the model one must specify the way in which the next transition to fire is chosen, and how the model keeps track of its past history; this set of specifications is called an execution policy. A discussion is presented of the impact that different execution policies have on semantics of the mode, as well as the characteristics of the stochastic process associated with each of these policies. When the execution policy is completely specified by the transition with the minimum delay (race policy) and the firing distributions are of the phase type, an algorithm is provided that automatically converts the stochastic process into a continuous time homogeneous Markov chain. An execution policy based on the choice of the next transition to fire independently of the associated delay (preselection policy) is introduced, and its semantics is discussed together with possible implementation strategies. >

Abstract: In this note we discuss the classification of duality orbits of $N=8$ gauged supergravity models. Using tensor classifiers, we show that there is a one-parameter family of inequivalent SO(8) gauged supergravity theories. We briefly discuss the couplings of such models and show that, although the maximally symmetric vacuum has the same quadratic spectrum, the supersymmetry transformations, the couplings, and the scalar potential are parameter dependent. We also comment on the possible M theory uplift and on the meaning of the parameter for the dual gauge theories.
