Abstract: Objective The purpose of this project was to evaluate the performance of a dentin adhesive system on carious and noncarious primary dentin in vivo. Method and materials Forty-eight primary molars with carious lesions were randomly assigned to 2 different treatments: group 1 (control, n = 24)--All identifiable, irreversibly infected dentin was removed prior to the application of the bonding agent and restorative material; group 2 (experimental, n = 24)--Irreversibly infected dentin was partially removed prior to the application of the bonding agent and restorative material. The control and experimental teeth were clinically monitored every 3 months and evaluated 12 months after restoration. The teeth were extracted around the time of exfoliation and processed for scanning electron microscopy. Results Retention rate, marginal integrity, and pulpal symptoms were identical in both groups. Radiographically, the radiolucent area associated with the experimental restorations did not increase with time in 75% of the cases. For the control group, the adhesive system formed a hybrid layer. In the experimental group, there was morphologic evidence of the formation of an acid-resistant "altered hybrid layer." An acid-resistant tissue, resulting from the interdiffusion of adhesive resin within the area of carious dentin, was observed adjacent to and under the altered hybrid layer. Conclusion Application of an adhesive restorative system to irreversibly infected dentin did not affect the clinical performance of the restoration.

Abstract: In this paper we present a filter algorithm for nonlinear programming and prove its global convergence to stationary points. Each iteration is composed of a feasibility phase, which reduces a measure of infeasibility, and an optimality phase, which reduces the objective function in a tangential approximation of the feasible set. These two phases are totally independent, and the only coupling between them is provided by the filter. The method is independent of the internal algorithms used in each iteration, as long as these algorithms satisfy reasonable assumptions on their efficiency. Under standard hypotheses, we show two results: for a filter with minimum size, the algorithm generates a stationary accumulation point; for a slightly larger filter, all accumulation points are stationary.

Abstract: The effect of milk protein polymerization prior to the yoghurt fermentation process was evaluated by enzymatic reaction with microbial transglutaminase ( Streptoverticillium mobaraense ). Yoghurt samples were manufactured with 100% milk or by substituting milk with 20 or 30% of liquid milk whey, aimed at determining the use of natural milk whey in dairy products. Transglutaminase was added at a protein ratio of 0.5 U g −1 to all samples and evaluated regarding rheological behavior, syneresis index and texture profile. The addition of enzyme transglutaminase contributed to syneresis prevention and increased the consistency index in yoghurt samples manufactured with milk whey. Yoghurt manufactured from 70% milk plus 20% milk whey, followed by enzymatic treatment, presented similar characteristics to traditionally manufactured yoghurt (C 100), with no alteration in the syneresis of the samples ( p > 0.05) and presented texture parameters similar to the control yoghurt (C 100).
